I was an ESOL teacher in Thailand for six years and even upgraded my degree. I never expected I would settle here in England though. And now I find my line of work a tad futile. Don't know what type of work I can get. I can't be a carer otherwise I would have been a nurse.

Try teaching in other countries that don't speak english but need to learn it, like Taiwan. The pay may not be that high as in England, but it may be near it or who knows it may be as high. When I was there, it is the second profession/job whose manpower they import from other countries. I have seen American teachers there. So I thought are they just volunteers? Maybe some works abroad to find there a good job or where they are needed. But of course, you need to learn their language too. [crisesand]

I'm sorry that you're finding work hard to come by Jemima, but it does surprise me. There are many immigrants to the UK who need to learn to speak English better. Perhaps if you approached your local adult education centre you could find some work, or even advertise your skills via the foreign community for one to one lessons. [GreenMoo]

Hey Jemina. Maybe you can do the opposite: teaching then Englishmen Thai language. Or just like the other myloters said, you can teach those who go to UK not for a long time and need to catch up with their languages. I suppose there are always opportunity there. Just keep trying. [chrissieatu]

I thought it might would came in handy. Then again they speak proper English there in England. I use to babysit for a lady that was born there in England years ago when I was a teenager. It was really interesting babysistting for her. Except instead of saying 2 p.m. theu say 2 ish or at least the lady I was babysitting for did. She use to teach piano lessons. She was very talented at it. I think she still teaches it but at a collage which is wonderful. My little sister took lessons from her and she was really good but quit once the lady that taught her told my sister that she was getting really talented and could be a teacher. I think my sister got scared because she was still in high school herself. [Shaun72]

You should check with the government about getting a job teaching english to the new emigrants arriving in England. They are usually night classes... but they must need teachers to do that. [Aussies2007]

I think there are lots of available opportunities there, if you really do want to work. But yes, you're job description would surely fall short because you're already in a place where English is spoken fluently (if not, well-practiced). There could be some work that can be related to your preference, just give it some time and you'll get what you'd seek for..wink [raijin]
Yes, Raijin, I'm sure there will be a work for me even if it doesn't have to be related to my profession. I'm pretty much flexible and I'm a fast learner so I think I will find a job when the right time comes. [Jemina]

If you want to improve your Writing skill then the best thing is to read for style. The best magazine to learn from is Reader's Digest. They got a superb writing style and you have to observe that. You can ignore the content. Just focus on the way things are written. I could give you a one-on-one lesson if you were here. [Jemina]
There are lots of jobs for English Language teachers in England, Immigrants have to learn English to qualify to live here now. Foreign students come and stay in England too and need English teachers, keep looking you will find opportunities. [nancyrowina]

Living in the UK myself I find it hard to understand why your skills are not being used. Many schools are crying out for teachers. Is it due to this country not recognising your qualification?? There are many adult learning centres that teach English, have you tried applying for a job like this. When I did my B.ED many of the students were from other countries. They were all qualified teachers but had to gain a UK degree to continue to teach here. Have you thought of going back to school as it would be a shame to end your career in teaching and end up in a more menial job. I wish you luck. [ItTakesAllSorts]

There are jobs available in England for your skills. It may depend on which particular area you are looking. In the Midlands, there are always positions open for ESOL teachers. You could have a look in your local JobCentre or search online for opportunities in your area or areas you might be able to move to. Good luck with your search. [pumpkinjam]

I thought there were lots of immigrants in England. Wouldn't they need ESOL classes? Maybe you could freelance teaching English to the families of foreign embassies. Or you could tutor children. And I'll bet you have some interesting experiences you could write about. Of course, writing doesn't pay much and isn't dependable. Don't give up! You'll find your niche. [youdontsay]

Why cant you learn Masters in Business Administration so you can employed anywhere as a marketing consultant and why cant you use you skills by communicating with clients, you probably speak american , so you could easily get a job in most of the firms. [ujustcanthateme]
