Ok..this is a double edged sword. You have bosses/people that don't want you to come in sick because you will spread your illness and you have bosses/people that expect you to be there no matter what. Sometimes you decide based on your financial situation or job security so no matter, what you go in. Do you go in sick or not?
[question posted by JenInTN]
responses and comments:
Yep, I go to work when I have a easy cold. I am mostly never sick, but sometimes I catch an cold. Twice I have done so. It is not something I do recommend. However staying home will not help. I rather work and get rid of it faster than lying in my bed and feel sorry for my self. happyI guess, I like my job so much that it do not matter. Dispite this, I know I should stay home, I work as assitance nurse for geratric care, and it is not wice of me to go to work with a cold. However, being sick, may cost you lot of salary and I can not really afford that. sad Have a nice day/evening. Catch you later [anetteh]
Sometimes beig around sickness does raise immunity! It is helpful to be exposed to a certain extent. [JenInTN]
I have gone to work and school numerous times when I was sick. On one occasion I went to work at a daycare center after being awake vomiting all night. It was my first week on the job and I was still in training so when I arrived I told the other lady that I would prefer not to come in close contact with the babies that day because I had been vomiting. I didn't want to call in because I really needed the job and I was afraid they would fire me since I was new. I also needed the money and couldn't pass up the opportunity to be there. [tammytwo]
It can understand your reasoning for going on in to work and it's good you asked not to be in close contact with the children. It's hard when your ill and your afraid your going to lose your job over something you can't help. [JenInTN]
while i was still a student, i used to attend school even if i am sick for as long as i can still carry myself enough. of course, i will be bringing with me the mediciens which i will have to be taking every four hours or so. when i was already working as an office employee, the habit of doing this, i brought with me at the workplace. it was just fine then duting those days. nowadays, i don't know if they still allow this in the offices. everyone is afraid of getting ill also as a consequence of a reckless employee who reported for work although sick. [trinidadvelasco]
It;s definately a lose lose situation. I have one boss that wants you there no matter what and another that don't want you anywhere near when your ill. There are people I work with that get mad at you for coming in sick and some that get mad if your not there.Sometimes you don't know what to do.I'm glad it's not a situation I have to deal with often but there are some that get ill more than others. [JenInTN]
I had a boss that wanted you at work weather you were sick or not. She was a real jerk about it sometimes. One time I was like, "Ok, I'll come in, but I don't want to hear about it when I have to run off to puke every 10 minutes." [lilybug]
It's hard lilybug when your in that position. You obviously can't do your job as it should be done when you are that sick. [JenInTN]
I can admit that I used to when I was younger; I know there were many times that I wanted to go to school sick or with a cold because I hated falling behind. The school I attended was incredibly difficult to catch up from, even for a day, so it'd be a fight for me to get through the school day rather than actually miss the day and stay home. Nowadays, I am more liberal about staying home. Most of my Grad school teachers are pretty understanding about those kinds of things; and at work, I have sick time. As a student teacher, the school would rather I stay home than risk getting kids sick. So I'll stay home. [thrwbckjay67]
Sometimes it is better to stay home than risk spreading the illness to others. Schools are the worst places for the spread of sickness. I have known schools to shut down for a week for illness. [JenInTN]
well depends how sick i am, if its just a common flu or whatever i'll still go, but if im throwing up or just extremely sick, i'll consider staying home, but sometimes u gotta rough it n go to work otherwise u cant pay your bills ahah [diacedez]
Bills pull rank for sure sometimes. Sometimes you have no choice but to struggle through. [JenInTN]
My boss made me come in no matter what or else they treated me like crap for a long time. I had gallstones and was throwing up and shaking and freezing and sweating and wasn't allowed to leave. I had it removed a couple days later on a Saturday and had to go back to work on Monday. I had to go to the hospital for ovarian cysts and couldn't even stand up but since I couldn't find anyone to cover my shift from the hospital, I had to come to work as soon as I got out of the er. I had to work hunched over and throwing up from the pain. [psspurgeon1]
That's terrible! I feel so bad for you! Sounds like you've been through a really tough time where this subject is concerned. I would hate to have been in your position. I hope things are better for you now..healthwise and workwise. [JenInTN]
Hi JenIn, In the past, when I can handle myself, I will still report and just take some pills! But, when it is very bad, I will take a break so to be fair to my body also!happyhappyhappy [checapricorn]
Pills on hand are always a plus when your sick and have to work. I agree though that sometimes the body needs to rest. [JenInTN]
If I'm really feeling rough I won't go in. If I have a runny nose or I've lost my voice then I will stay home because it just isn't professional to deal with customers with a runny nose or no voice. Apparently you're most contagious before you even know you're sick. So by the time you're decided to stay or go you've already done the damage! [jesssp]
That's true. I agree to it's a bit unprofessional when dealing with customers. [JenInTN]
i have gone to work many times sick. duh!!! [ANTIQUELADY]
Getting it done is what we have to do! One way or another. [JenInTN]
i am in a band so i have not much of a choice but still go to work even when i am sick. if i can not really make it i will look for someone who can take my place for the mean time, or the group will look for a replacement for a day or two. it is not that easy to look for a replacement but that is what we do when one of us is sick. if the singer is the one who is sick that is the only time we need to cancel work. it is much complicated to look for the replacement of the singer [se7enthbird]
My boyfriend is a musician too. He plays anything with strings and some without. He sings too. It amazes me how easily he just picks up different things and plays them.lol. [JenInTN]
it all really depends on whether i can function well or not. if i am not feeling alright and yet i can still function, then i will go. but when i really cant anymore, i would rather stay home and rest. better rest rather than push myself and make things worse. [cookieweber]
Sometimes it is better to rest because it will make things worse. It can make the illness last longer by not taking a day or two off. [JenInTN]
well back when I was in high school I would not go to school if I was feeling sick. Because it was much more easier to do those things. But now that I'm in university I have to be there every single day. If I don't I would be missing out a great part of the lesson. Plus there are always work to do. And when you don't do the work you would lose your grade. Sick or not there is nothing that I can do. Unless I present a medical certificate. But if you had a virus. A terrible flu virus. Would you go to your doctor and pay tons of cash for him to tell you that you need to rest and drink water and eat fruits. No I would not do that at all. Life is not always easy. And if this is so hard to do in school I don't want to see what's out there in the real world where I would have to go to work every day. Gives me shivers. [zackyo7]
Don't worry zackyo7. Your in crunch time right now. Just think when you get out of school you'll have good insurance and a good salary. All your hard work will have paid off and if you need to be out because of sickness, you will be able to do so.Good luck. [JenInTN]
I do sometimes go to school when I'm sick because I don't like being behind in my school work. But I might still leave school early. [Precious102688P]
It's tough if you have a lot to make up when your out. It's a good idea to come in part of the day so your not counted out and you can go ahead and get your makeup work. [JenInTN]
I'm lucky to live in a country with excellent health care and a labor-friendly system, and I have a good job that offers supplementary health insurance. All this means I get full pay if I am off sick, so I stay home. However, other people I work with don't get reimbursed all sick days, so they usually come to work when they are ill to avoid losing money. I understand why, but as an actor I have to be 100% healthy to perform so I don't like being exposed to their germs. I wish they all had my health plan so they could stay home when they're not well. [TheCasualReporter]
I also have a good healthcare plan at my place of employment. I have vacation days and nice insurance plan that doesn't charge an arm and leg to visit the doctor.I do feel for those who don't have this as an option.I have worked in jobs where you would drag in sick or not. An actor huh? Wow..what a great career! [JenInTN]
I did not have the fear of job security in those days. I did not think it proper to go to office if I am very ill. People might feel uneasy hearing your coughs and blows. I usually stay home to get recovered soon. Of course there are other issues to be considered for different people in different circumstance. It all depends. [zhuhuifen46]
It does depend on the situation but like you I don't want to be hacking and sneezing with anyone in a close distance. [JenInTN]
When i am sick i will do to office because i can have an excuse and take rest without doing any work and i can get the pay for that day and i can conserve my holidays. [saichandtalluri]
Nice plan. Some offices expect the same amount of participation if you come in. Sick or not. Your lucky to have such a nice job. [JenInTN]
Normally, if my sick is not so serious, I will try to go to work, especially when I am in school, cough or fever is small thing, I will go to school normally. Even when I am in work, still the same. Because I am a person to be serious and full of passion for working,I do not want to delay my working or study because of small sick, I always tell myself, it's small thing, I can get over. [ntmingyu]
Very high ambition you have. Don't forget to take care of yourself though. With your ambition, you can be anything you want. [JenInTN]
Yes I go to work even if I am sick but depending on the need to work. If I have important task that needs to be urgently done, even if I am sick I will go to work. That is if I am capable to go to work. But if my situation is worst, meaning I can't talk, I can't walk... that is not suitable to go to work. There are really times that even we have some pains we do feel from our body, we still have to go to work because it is very needed by the company. I can remember when I was studying, even if I am sick I go to school. My mother will scold me because i am not fit to go to school yet but I insisted to go. My reason was because if I will be absent and our teachers will be teaching new topics then I will be left behind. What will be the answers I will give on my quizzes on the next day? That's why I go to work even if I am sick. [gladysjanem]
Nice explanation gladysjanem. It is why we brave the storm. You must be very accomplished. [JenInTN]
I will not go to work when I'm sick, this makes my sickness deeper and can't focus the work on hand. If there is a big project, I have no choice but to go. This is not a very good to work if flu, chicken pox and viral infections am I getting. [Hvaniday]
It does make it worse to go sometimes. Sometimes we need to take a day off. [JenInTN]
i will just attend the office i9f my boss wishes me nor i will just get to my school and study fine no problem schooling first and then if my boss makes me to come or not i will go as per him [prasanna1990]
It's good to go on the bosses cue. You can kinda read their reaction when thay talk to you sometimes. [JenInTN]
ya i usually do unless i know its going to be a pointless day in school where we watch a documentary or have free study time [prickolee]
Would you go if it was an important day? However sick you were? [JenInTN]
I almost never ever get sick and if I do it is so mild that I haven't missed a days work in over 15 years due to illness. I work in the public and I don't miss just because I have a headache or a slight cold. My boss told me that he would be very, very concerned if I ever called out sick. I almost did on april fools just to mess with him but didn't...maybe this year. [sid556]
Hi sid. It's very good your never sick..especially working with the public. You are very lucky. LOL..you should haave messed with the boss a little. Thanks for reponding. [JenInTN]
Well, firstly I hardly gets sick, and when I do...I love going to work...Why should i'll be the one suffering;) cos my friend always say to me we are always with you in good and in bad,so i just took their advice and include them with me when i catch cold..lolz..jokes apart, well I work from home,so I've no boss,no order from anybody. [pratt69]
wooow,m really good in guessing [pratt69]
As I work from home online, I just try to push on, it's my only sorce ofd income and things are pretty bad often.Last week I had a bit of an accident and am still bruised and aching allover, but I feel gulty if I donn't do enough. [missbdoll]
Thank you missbdoll. I do understand times can be very rough. I hope your feeling better and 100% again. Thanks for responding [JenInTN]
Definitely,I will stay at home when i was a student if I was sick,it was a good chance to get out of school,LOL~~~ Am i supposed to be a bad boy? And if i had a work in office now,i will go to work if it is not too sick to work. The boss would like to see the employee on his position working hard. In the other hand ,if I was in the factory, and work on the machines,I will take a rest for safety.Safety is always in the first priority in the life! [camelhjx]
LOL..badboy camelhjx...I agree. Saftey first! [JenInTN]
The sad thing is there in no call in at my work place. I work in fast food and yeah we have to report. Dont get me wrong if we get there and they can tell we are sick they do release us. But trust me they know when one if facking. Did I mention that coming in with a hangover does not count as sick??? ha... [megdp07]
Hi megdp07! I agree hangovers do not count! lol...It is tough on the coworkers when someone is out. It sometimes adds more of a workload on everyone else. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
Hey Jen! This is a tough question! Whenever I would go into work when I was sick I would end up getting much sicker and the end up being out sick even longer! Bosses don't like employees to ever be out sick! It is just not allowed! And I would never just be a little sick! I would get the flu or bronchitis where I would have a fever and be really sick in bed! If I went into work I could barely function. So whatever I did would be the wrong thing! It was always a no win situation for me! [Opal26]
It is a no win situation. I'm like you..I hardly ever get sick but when I am..it's terrible. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
I normally do not get sick but it is is a cold or nothing majorly contagious, and I do not need bed rest, I will go. If I need to rest or will pass it onto others, I will stay home. [nanajanet]
Me too. It depends on what's wrong with me as to whether I go in or not. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
The unfortunate thing is thatn people do go to work or school when they are sick and so spread the germs around. That means more people end up sick because the germs are taken home to family members etc and in the long run it takes longer to get over the illness. I am seldom sick but if I am it will depend on the severity of the illness as to what I will do. If I have say a bad headache, then I will try to rest and see if it goes away which is what sometimes happen. If I have a mild cold then I will work as well but if it one of those where you have aching muscles etc, then a relief driver has to do the trip. I might be okay the next day but better to be safe than sorry because driving a truck when you have a runny nose, aching muscles and coughing is not safe. However if I was to go to work I would probably pass germs to less people than most, simply because of the nature of my job. I can easily just keep well away from other people most of the time because others do the actual loading and unloading of the truck. For many people though they make their decision based on their financial status, whether they get paid sick leave, how much time they have taken off in the past and whether their employment is secure. I have actually known people who will go to work when they are sick because they have children and want to keep their sick leave in case they need it if their children are unwell. [oldboy46]
Hi oldboy! It is unfortunate that people are sometimes feeling forced to go to work because of their financial situation. It does aid the illnes in spreading and can do more harm than good in the long run. Thanks for the response and take care. [JenInTN]
Jen, if my illness is minor and there is some urgent work to dispose of in my office, I would definitely attend the office, irrespective of the fact what others or boss might say. When I am too ill to attend the office and I know there would be of no use me joining my office, I would prefer a leave. If any of my subordinate is genuinely ill, I would advice him/her not to come to office, I'll dispose of her/his work. [dpk262006]
Many thanks for the best response. I am delighted.happy [dpk262006]
Hey, Well usually I don't really ever get sick, maybe not even once every 2 years. So what I do, is that when I feel tired or something I usually tell my College that I am sick considering that I am not even sick for one day of the year, I think it is ok! happy [EliteUser]
Good for you that your rarely sick. I guess one day off is good for you sometimes. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
I know it may sound weird. But if I don't feel so bad, then I have to still go to work. As you know, sometimes it is not easy to take a day off even if you are sick. Your boss may not be happy to see his employees have days off. He expects that his employees works hard as well as the mule. I love China [youless]
LOL..yes alot of employers expect you work like a mule. Thank you for responding. [JenInTN]
when i did work i use to work sometimes not feeling well i did what i had to do to may ends meet.sometimes i wanted to stay home but with responsibilty i had no choice. [annjilena]
I do understand not having a choice. Gotta eat. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
that really depends on how bad my illness is... if i am really sick, of course i won't force myself to go to work no matter what happens... but if i can still stand it, i will go to work as i need the money... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]
Thank you linli_78. Very sensible answer. [JenInTN]
Unless I am really sick that I can't stand I do go to work. It is easier that way than having to fill in all those sickness papers, getting a medical certificate if it takes more than three days, etc. They want us to be there passing the cold to everybody around. [overwings]
Thanks overwings! They often do want you in there spreading your illness. There is alot of paperwork to fill out sometimes. [JenInTN]
Because I'm pretty good at knowing how not to spread a cold (and people with colds can help prevent spreading them if they're very cautious about it), I do tend to go to work with a cold. On the other hand, I tend, too, to stay home when I'm not the least bit sick. (It all evens out, I figure. :) ) Most companies I've worked for pretty much expect everyone to show up (sick, dying, or otherwise). :) [LisaHW]
lol..I guess it does even out. A lot of companies are like that. Very little concern for the employees. [JenInTN]
I haven't called in to work in over a year except for once. I experienced a miscarriage and got a hospital excuse from the emergency room so I could miss that day to recooperate. So far, that's the only day I've missed. I hated missing those hours, but I needed that time home. [CRSunrise]
Sometimes you just have to be out. That sounds like a good reason to me. Sorry about your miscarriage. You did need that time at home. [JenInTN]
when i was studying yes is till go on school specialy if examination but if normal days no.i stay at homehappy. [bombshell]
Thanks bombshell. Sometimes making up work at school is harder than taking a day off work. [JenInTN]
No I don't go to work when I am sick. I would not be able to give my best therefore I would stay in bed trying to recover and gain my energy back so that I will go back to work and continue with my duties later on in the week. I don't take sick leave for trivial reasons but if I feel the need to take sick leave I do. [ronaldinu]
Good for you ronaldinu. I think if your able, you should be home getting over your illness. [JenInTN]
I can look at this from two perspectives. As an employee and as a manger with 55 staff and a corporate objective to deliver. In both cases I would prefer not to come in. I mean if people are really sick. A bit of a sniffle is one thing (but it does depend on where you are working of course. Not in food preparation or medical/hygiene areas) but a full blown cold of flu etc is definitely a reason to stay home. Sick people are rarely productive and can make themselves worse and the time that they end up needing to take off far exceeds what they would have done had they simply stayed home at the outset of their illness. Better that they stay home and get better. Some worry about job security. The occasional illness ought to be able to be accommodated by any employer. If an employer show some understanding they are more like;y to have a happy and well focused workforce too. There are those that abuse time off for sick reasons, always off on a monday of Friday for example. They are dealt with quite simply by a good manager. [p1kef1sh]
Thank you p1kef1sh. I agree a little understanding can make for a happy and well focused work crew. Illness should be accomodated to a degree. People that abuse it can be picked out right away and dealt with. [JenInTN]
No, even in high school if I had a hint of the sniffles, I'd stay home and watch TV all day. And now the next big question...how long could I make my school vacation last? Sometimes a week...sometimes less. It all depended on how bored I got staying home...and if I was feeling better...and how much I missed my boyfriend(s) ..woooops I meant boyfriend ha ha [Druscilla34]
LOl...naughty druscilla. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
If I'm catching, I definitely don't. If I know I really can't hack it, I don't. If I'm just a little bit under the weather, I try to show up. I just try to take it easy and combat whatever's threatening to overcome me with lots of soothing liquids and vitamin sources. [wahmivy]
Gotta have medicine to make it through the day sometimes. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
i don't go to school when i am sick. i take rest in my house . If we strain during sickness , then it may lead to something serious . Moreover, even if i wish to go, my parents don't allow me . i can't speak against them . [Anandrajendran]
Thanks for the response. Sometimes resting is better in the longrun. [JenInTN]
I work for myself as a therapist and I nearly always see clients when I am sick, unless it is a contagious bug like 'flu. Even then I tend to work on my computer because it helps takes my mind off how rotten I feel! LOL. Derek [derek_a]
Thank you derek. I try to go ahead and work to but sometimes..I stay home. [JenInTN]
I work everyday even on the weekends, but I have the luxury that I work from home. So even if I feel ill I will work. I am a real workaholic. But if I did work outside the home I would still go to work, unless I have sickness that can spread easily. Then I would not take the risk to make others sick and stay home. [mistissa]
Thank you mistissa. If your a workaholic sickness sure won't stop you. Sometimes I agree that it is wise to stay home.Take care. [JenInTN]
When I was doing my School days, I used to go to School even if I am sick. One day we had a School tour and we returned from tour by 5.30 AM. Those who came with me didn't attend the School that day but I went. Haha. I love my School. I enjoy there than at home. I hate to go to college and so I won't go even if I am not sick. Haha. [vidhyavini]
LOL well..if it's something you son't like in the first place..being sick can be just a good excuse. Thank you vidhyavini and take care. [JenInTN]
Hi dear thanks god that i never got that ill that i need to take long leaves but if i have fever, flu or cough and its not bad then i come to offie, but if its worse and can effect others than i take one day off. And if i have diherrehia then sure u have to take day off Wish u all rthe best Bye [cupid74]
Thanks Jen really appreciate ur nice wishes. u r really nice friend Take care Stay happy bye [cupid74]
If I am not really very sick, I usually just work. I haven't tried being really sick (God forbid!). I think when a person is sick the body is only trying to tell the person to slow down or get a rest. [veganprince]
That's a good point veganprince! Sickness can mean to slow down. Sometimes if we press forward it can make things much worse. Thanks for responding! [JenInTN]
i'll try to go but it depend how sick i am if i go or not. since my body don't fight inflection too well anymore [syankee525]
It would be best for you to stay in then. Your body may need a little extra time to recooperate. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
It depends how sick I am. I dont get sick much - but if I do and its a bad one I wont come in (I will use a vacation day) unless something important is going on - in which case I will come in to work. I got a Cold recently - but it wasnt bad and so I came to work. I dont really like it when people are real sick and come to work - they are only spreading their germs and I dont want them so I would rather work harder and they not come in then they come in and make me sick [foreverfarm1]
I bet people wish there were a lot more people with your mind set foreverfarm1. I'm like you..it's never a little sick..it's really really sick.lol Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
It depends on how sick I am. If it's just a simple cold, cough or sore throat, I'll still go to the office. If I'm having a low-grade fever, I would go in, if I have some important matters to attend to. Otherwise, I would just stay home and rest. [lazeebee]
It is hard to stay home if you know there's something very important to take care of. I have a lot of resposibility at work and when I have to be out..I feel guilty even though I couldn't help it.lol Thanks for responding lazeebee! [JenInTN]
Clearly if you have a cold then the best thing to do is to stay at home and not spread it around but if everyone did that I think in the winter it would have a serious effect on industry and commerce. Also there are about 125 different viruses that cause a cold and when you get one you became immumed to that particular one so gradually over the years you become immumed to more and more viruses so maybe it is not so bad to keep catching them [maidangela7349]
That's an interesting response maidangela! It's true we build resistances to viruses and even simple germs. If we shelter ourselves to much we could get very ill from just walking out the door. Not to mention what you said about the economy and commerce. Thanks for responding! [JenInTN]
When I was still studying I do go to school even if I am sick, I really don't want to missed class, and the lessons as well. And after graduation, I still go to the office and work since I just want to finished my responsibilities. Although I am lazy sometimes, I feel that I am obligated to do the things that needs to be done, with that a sickness cannot hinder me from doing from I need to do. At times also, I need to consider my classmates(before) and officemates, my sickness might spread. I have to be responsible on what ever actions, I have to do. [adoremay]
Hi adoremay. Responsibility is very important when choosing whether to go in or not. Thank you for sharing! [JenInTN]
well, i am working far away from home and all the "Earned leaves" that i get in a year is hardly 15. So i try to save up as many leaves as possible so that i can take a long holiday once a year and go home and eat my mom's delicious cooking.. Hence i would definitly go to work if i am sick unless and until it is something dangerous and contaagious like jaundice, chicken pox etc. I would never do that to my colleagues.. But something like common cold can be given to a colleague without feeling too bad.. LOL [Nisha_Verghese]
LOL..What the hey..it's just a cold..I can see why you would go in sick. Some moms can really cook. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
well, it depends on how sick i am because where i work, its a small business and if i am away for a day, i am really missed. the work just piles up and i end up doing it when i get back. but if i am really sick, i dont go to work. whats the point of sharing your germs and making everyone else sick? [cher913]
Thanks cher913! It's true that the work load just piles up for some of us that are sick and at home. Especially where the small business is concerned. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
If I am very sick, then I would skip work. But if I am not so sick- if the sickness is minor , then I would not skip work. Work is very important and not to be skipped, Because of work , we can earn money. Suppose we have no work and no money, then we will have no money to spend for our medicine and we would remain sick and that would be horrible. [Frederick42]
That would be horrible! People have lost their jobs for a lot less than taking some time of for a cold. Thanks frederick! [JenInTN]
no,if i feel uncomfortable this day i will stop working.have a good rest and have full energy face another day.if i go to work in sick,it is not only unresponsible to myself but also my company. [littlek1230]
Thanks littlek. Sometimes I will stay home too. [JenInTN]
Well it depends, if i my sickness is not painful and i can still manage it, i will still go to work for nobody will take over my work except me. I dont like to have pending work so as much as possible i dont want to make absences. happy [Margarit]
Thanks for the response Margarit! I don't like absences either. A lot of work when you go back to think about too. [JenInTN]
I actually prefer to attend my office even during my sickness. Though I do not suffer from major diseases. But I suffer a lot from minor headache, and some other health hazards. Actually, being at work helps me to recover early as I can hardly get any scope to think of myself while during working hours. I just take regular medicines and continue to work. [nilzerous1]
Sometimes the best thing is to stuff a pocket full of medicine and head to the office. If you get better faster..that's the way to go. Thanks for the response! [JenInTN]
Unless I am very sick and really can't go to work, I would prefer working than calling in for sick, because I hate seeing doctor (If I want to have sick leave with payment, I need to go and see the doctor and ask him to write me a sickness proof and submit it to HR). [mein_traum]
Policy can definately make up our minds for us sometimes. Sounds like a hassle to take a day off for you. Thanks for responding! [JenInTN]
Hai Friend! Yes I go to office first. Then I seek permission from my boss and go to medical centre for necessary treatment. Happy mylotting. [aminul8427]
You are very very welcome. [aminul8427]
Depends on how sick I am. If it is stomach flu, or runs or fever of about 3 to 4 over, then there isn't a whole lot you can do at work. Fever can cause you to make poor judgement calls, and the other two scenarios has you calling Alice on the white phone far too often. blink For tummy ailments, ginger is helpful to settle an upset stomach. That's why some people keep ginger ale on hand, cuz it is the easiest way to ingest it. I think even ginger snap cookies could help, providing they weren't of cheap quality that uses a lot of fat, and transfat in them. But best is to cook something with ginger root, or....better still, likely make a tea using the root. I have never done it but that is my guess. [plunketear]
LOl..I wouldn't want to ringing Alice all day. I'll have to remember ginger. Thanks plunk! [JenInTN]
Yes I go to work even if I am sick in fact right now I am sick because of change in weather been sick since Friday but still I go to work. I don't want to spend my time just lying around at home it just makes me sick more. I just take meds. [p3halliwel2005]
Hope you get to feeling better. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
I don't like to when I'm sick, because I hate it when other people come into work sick and then pass it onto me, but my bosses will not be happy if you have a day off. This is bad, as it shows that they would prefer more of their employees to be ill rather than let one person have just a couple of days off. [GemmaR]
It is bad GemmaR. It is like I said..a double edged sword! Thanks for the response! [JenInTN]
I think most people go to work if they have a simple cold. It takes afew meds and you can handle it for 8 hours. BUT, afew years back I was having bronchitis about every three months. I would just get over it and get it again. It finally went into pheumonia. So I missed ALOT of work. If you have ever had bronchitis you know how awful it can be. After the pneumonia I never had bronchitis again. Months of sickness. How fun! [celticeagle]
Wow..I bet you did have to take some time off! I'm glad your better now. Thanks for responding! [JenInTN]
Yes. I go as a matter of a fact I just got through coughing. I have a bad cold. My co-workers want me to go home. However my boss has not said a word. Depending on how bad I feel I normally come in sick. I save my sick time for when my children get sick. I have over 200 hrs sick time now. [agrant10]
I'm sorry to hear that. When you have children it's important to save that sick time. Believe me..I know. Thanks for responding and I hope your better soon. [JenInTN]
It all depends on if I have sick time or not whether or not I will go in. Sometimes I will, so they will know I am really sick and then they send me home lol. [darkjedi]
Yeah I dont have vacation yet lol, I dont get it until the 21st of this month, I will be there a year then. Cant wait to be able to take a couple of days off lol. [darkjedi]
If I just have a mild cold I would go. There are measures you can take to keep from spreading a virus, like washing your hands often or not touching surfaces that others have to touch with your bare hands. I always keep disinfectant wipes handy when I'm sick and use them to open doors and such. If I have something more serious like the flu, no there is no way I would risk infecting someone else. Flu viruses can affect different people in different ways. If someone were to end up in the hospital or even die because I didn't stay home from work, I would never forgive myself. The worst flu I ever had was because my boss had just come back from a business trip in Hong Kong with a bad case of some weird Asian flu. He came to the office anyway, terribly sick, walked into my office to tell me something and coughed right in my face. Three days later I was so sick I thought I was gonna die. It turned into pneumonia and I ended up having to go to the hospital emergency room. I missed 2 weeks work. I can understand why some people don't want to come into work if they have to work around Microbiology Equipment cause you have to keep they stuff very clean.I was only paid for 3 sick days and the office manager was nice enough to let me use 2 days vacation pay. But I still lost a weeks pay, not to mention the doctor bills and prescriptions. Boy did I read him the riot act when I finally got back to work!!! [craftcatcher]
I bet you did tell him a thing or two! I would be furious too! I hate you had to go through that! Good tips on how to keep from spreading your illness! I'll have to pass them on to a few I work with [JenInTN]
Unless my sickness makes me feel extremely weak and that I need to rest, I prefer to go to work because I would otherwise feel bored to death at home - and feel even more sick. [DEVONECO]
Thank you friend. Sometimes it's better to go to work than stay at home. [JenInTN]
hi Jen...yeah sometimes (school) especially if its exam time and think that i can still manage to take one...usually it ends up going home after the first exam and take another special test after i recovered from it...when i still working full time....no i don't work when im not feeling well...its useless i guess [vanities]
It's hard to miss exams so I see where your coming from. It is sometimes useless to go to work sick. Thanks for responding [JenInTN]
If i have many difficult things to deal with soonest,i will go to work or school.i will leave early if i finished all the things. If there are nothing to do ,i will ask for one day when i am sick. [Tinna_He]
Thanks for responding..It would be nice to finish things before going home to rest. [JenInTN]
I've gone to work sick, got my client sick and put her in the hospital. But this was a really Kick But bug, I've been to work sick before and didn't get her sick. [ElicBxn]
Wow..sounds like a kick butt bug alright! Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
Unless I am on the verge of not being able to literally move or if my cold is very contagious. I go to work sick some days, since I have a private office and I don't usually have visitors in my office. I still go to work, since I hate to get behind in my work, and because of the nature of what I do, I have to stay ahead of everyone else. That was my attitude when I was literally a workaholic working 60-95 hours per week. When I work 41-46 hours per week nowadays and I do not plan to get sick. Although I know it may happen someday, I eat right, drink plenty of water and try to help as many people as possible in life.I worked so much it felt like my mind was one of those storage applications and just held work related info. With my lessor work schedule, I still have to stay ahead of everyone else in my job, but I have access to volunteers that assist me, so if I am out, it isn't as crazy as I've had it to be in times pass when I was doing everyone else's job for them and not just my own. I have 5 hours of sick leave left over from last year. Although those hours don't carry over from year to year. So as you can see I don't try to use them at all. Ironically though, this year I only have 8 hours left. I had to go into the hospital unexpectedly so that's primarily the reason why.Could have been worse a man in the ER got in a bike crash without a Motorycycle Helmets on.[hdjohnson]
Well I hope your better now and thanks for the response. I'm glad things are a little easier for you now because I know how it is to have to stay on top of the game. [JenInTN]
I did go in while sick because the boss expected it, he never really believed anyone was sick.. So I would go in and then if I was sick enough, he would send me home again.. None of the employees word was good enough, he had to see for himself.. A few times, I was so sick that I couldn't go and then I stayed home and didn't care what he thought..They do have a way of making you feel like you are telling a story and just laying our of work.. [DonnaLawson]
That's no good. I have a way of feeling guilty when I'm out anyway much less if the boss thought everyone was lieing. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
Hi Jen, when I still in study, I will go to school when I'm sick, but not in fever. If mine at home sick that means the longer I will have to wait to buy that Brighton Jewelry I want. And when I working now, I also need to go to work when I'm sick, as my boss don't like the staff always absence on job. [my125125]
Thanks my125125. Alot of people have to go on in. Take care. [JenInTN]
Hi Jen, I'm not working anymore but when I did I worked as a teller at a bank. If I had a cold and no fever, sometimes I would go in. It all depended on how bad I felt. If I felt pretty bad, then I stayed home, for my sake and others. But another reason I had to consider was if it was worth taking the chance of being out of balance because my head wasn't clear enough to work without mistakes. Personally, I feel that anyone sick and likely to spread it around should stay home. It's only fair to those around you. leenie [leenie50]
Good points leenie. You do take a risk of spreading it and I know it clouds your judgement being ill. Especially if you take medicine. Thanks [JenInTN]
That's a good question Jen. I don't think I did when I was in school. I didn't care for school anyway and I avoided it even when I wasn't sick. LOL As far as work goes I did go in once when I was sick. It wasn't so much that I needed the money as it was only a part time minimum waged job, but it was a new job and I didn't think it would be a good idea to call in sick so soon after I got the job, so I went in. blush My husband goes in to work when he is sick, if he's well enough to. He has to though as he's the only one bringing in a paycheck. Fortunately he works alone the majority of the time and when someone does go to check on his work or to talk to him they turn around and head the other way and get the heck out. LOL [sacmom]
LOL... It's easier to make the decision when you work alone to go in or not. I can see what your saying too about not wanting to miss after just getting your job that time. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
hi friends yeah if it is just normal weakness or slight headache, then also i attend my college.but if it is something really very serious like having a very high fever with complete weakness ,then i dont go to college.i attend a doctor and take proper medications and take some rest. bye!!!!!!!!!!!!! [23uday]
Hi 23uday! Thanks for responding. A lot of people have said it's hard to catch up on their assignments in school when they have to be out sick It's tough to choose sometimes. Rest and medincine can be the best thing though. [JenInTN]
Unless I am really sick and need to rest in bed, I will go to work. Ever heard that once you spread the virus to others, you will heal faster? J/K only. If I am on leave, work still has to be done by me. It will just pile up. To avoid piling up, the only choice is to go to work! If someone were to take over my duties, sure I will gladly go for sick leave. [whyaskq]
It would be nice to have a stand-in when we get sick. Sure would help keep the work load down..I might even use a stand-in if I weren't sick providing I had one.lol Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
hi Jen, most of the time when I am sick I go to work. I find it better to maybe work on two thirds of the stuff I find on my desk than not to work on it at all and leave everything undone. Most of the time its hard to catch up on all that stuff when you come back later and too much is expected of you in too little time to accomplish everything. [book1962]
That's true book1962! It is hard to catch up if you have a heavy workload and have to take a day off. I am very serious about what I do too and when I have to be out,I feel like I'm playing catch up for a week. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
I was very disobedient when i was at school. let aloone my sick period,i even feigned illness to avoid classes especially when i wa snot done with my home work. but now, with time i grew a little disciplined & obedient. Also my job requires cent percent attendance & attention to get it done. also its money who speaks most rather that health or comfort. Some people have to take the sick days because they are at home with their baby dealing with Baby Feeding Supplies every where. So I try my best to go to my office even when I am sick. [uditpanda]
Hi uditpanda! Money does have a way of talking us into showing up to work sick.Heck in my younger days I would have done anything to get to work even if I had to ride a Skateboards and Snowboards. It's tough when you have to worry about your job and finances while your sick too. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
in my opinion,so long as i am not very seriousily ill,i could go to work or school. [septemberxue]
Thanks for the response! Sick is one thing..seroiusly ill another! [JenInTN]
Hello JenInTN! I still go to work even if I am sick. The key is to work at a place you like more then home let say a place to sells something cool like Hollywood Memorabiliathen you would be in. Yeah, unless it is contagious or if I am very weak to do my tasks as a teacher. Our attendance is being monitored closely and if we get absent even for valid reasons, it affects our evaluation. Our evaluation affects our teaching load for the succeeding semester. Moreover, our teaching load determines our salary for a given period of time. Well, personally, I really enjoy my job and so, even if I am sick as long as it does not jeopardize my ability to deliver my lectures, I would attend to my job. [dolce_vita78]
Thanks for the response. My attendance is monitered closely too. I do have vacation days I can use to save this but I like using them for vacation time. I can see why you would go in sick. Liking your job definately has that effect. [JenInTN]
