Does Typing Online Burn Calories

Hi. I work on and offline about 15 hours a day. I do alot of typing at Mylot and work alot of other sites as well each day. I am wandering if all of this typing actually burns alot of calories? Does anyone know? I cannot find time to exercise but if this will work just the same in a sense as far as bruning some calries, please let me know. How can we figure out how many calories we burn while typing? Can we use one of those clickers they use for walking? Would that work?

I saw this discussion and though, "Huh? You gotta be kidding me!" But, I was curious, and checked out your question, and would you believe it........ YES, you lose calories whilst typing! Woohoo!!!!! I spend a long time on the computer, typing, each day! This chart says, if you're a 165lbs and 5'5" tall, female, aged 35 years, you burn 29 calories per hour. But wait.. that's hardly fair! A male of the same age, weight and height, burns 31 calories per hour. Ho hum! My dreams are shattered. I'll just have to get the weights out, I guess. thumbdown If you'd like to have some fun with the chart, click here.... http://www.fitday.com/webfit/exerciseinfopage.html Brightest Blessings! [Darkwing]
Haha that is cool thanks for that information but id rather use my weights too and pump some iron to keep the calories at bay. [RastamanG]

Well as far as my recalling goes, we burn about 25 calories an hour by typing. So that means you burn about 375-400 calories everyday through typin alone. Nice job! [ProdigY47]
haha Thanks for that, i cant believe you can actually loose calories from typing away this is crazy stuff lol. [RastamanG]

The figure I have seen is that we only burn a 102 calories per hour of typing. It is not a big number at all. I don't dare drink a can of pop; it would undermine all my progress. It is just too bad I have yet to figure out how to type while riding the exercise bike. [morgandrake]
That would be hard to accomplish at least for me anyhow but I have used a thighmaster which is great for toning those thighs and arms and easy to do and to do while pages or loading or searching. Also is you have a office chair that swivels then you can hold onto desk and swish back and forth it is supposed to help the waistline, and while pages are loading you can sit in chair and do stretch and toe touches.. it all adds up though and does burn calories. The thighmaster is a good investment. also to tone arms wear weight bands for wrist that burns calories.. [mtdewgurl74]

No it won't. It will actually make you gain a little because your just sitting down and not moving and burning off fat. If you do try it drink a gallon of water a day no sink water. That will help you loose weight while your sitting and typing but it will help a little. [rita8941]
Go to the link above that Darkwing gave us. choose the activity your are doing and put your information in and it will tell you what you burn per hour. We do burn while typing. [stephcjh]

Thats good to know as I do spend a lot of time on the pc, do you burn more then if you type quicker how quick would you have to type to burn a lot more lol [kezabelle]
That is a very good question. I wander also how fast we have to type and does it have to be steady or can there be breaks in between while moving on to the next page or task.If typing online burn-calories I would look like a bodybuilder and would break out the camera and take a picture and put it up using tmframing Darwing gave us a calculator above. Choose the activity and put in your own information and calculate it for yourself. It is different for each of us with age etc. [stephcjh]

God, I hope so! lol Wouldn't that be the thing? I wouldn't imagine that it burns that many calories as we are usually sitting down while doing it. Have you ever tried moving your legs up and down while at the computer or squeezing your buns together to get a little workout back there? You could even put weights on your ankles while lifting your legs. I have done both if I am on too long. I know it sounds crazy, but it does get the blood circulating. [saigonwarrior]
Darkwing gave us a calculator to use above. Try it out with your very own information. We do burn calories while typing. I don't have any ankle weights but i do try to move my legs while sitting here before I run out of energy after working on and offline for 15 hours a day LOL. Whewww. It doesn't sound crazy to me. I do it myself too. [stephcjh]

Never thought of that before, burning calories typing. If so, probably very few. But there are exercise you can do while sitting at your pc. One would be leg lifts alternating lifting your legs up while sitting in front of your pc. [terri0824]
Yeah. I have done those exercises too while sitting here. Darkwing posted a link for all of us to use on the first page. It is a calculator for each person and each job you do. check it out if you want to. [stephcjh]

Haha! I don't have any idea. My own experience would say, maybe. Last month, I started working just in front of my laptop for more hours than I used to. After and before work, I'm just in front of my computer. Guess what? I slimmed down. Usually, I put my laptop on the higher table and when I work on it for hours, I seldom stand up and walk in place. My goal everyday is at least a thousand step. Maybe that worked. You can try it! happy [jeanniemay]
Visit the first page of my discussion. Darkwing gave us all a site to go to calclulate what we burn for each person and job we do. I have a desktop computer so it is hard for me to stand and work with it. [stephcjh]

Oh, I don't think so, but wouldn't it be nice if it did???lol [carmelanirel]
Yeah, well I don't think you can burn enough to lose weight though, but good site..wink [carmelanirel]

You'd be surprisedshocked how many calories it does actually burn I went and checked at a site I am joined which is great to keep track of things and it said that typing on a computer/manual/electric typewriter for 4 hours actually burns 210 calories. Here is the link to it so you can also gauge other activities you may do it has it for just about everything. http://www.fitday.com/WebFit/Index.html If you make a Free account, go to activites on the left. Go to where it says All activities, then go down to the occupation 12th one down, press go! It will take you to jobs and go down to the T's It will say Typing, electric, manual,or computer. click the add button then it takes you back to front page then go down to today's activites it will have the typing thing added you go in change time and then click save changes and then it will tell you how much you have burned. They even have it for sex..blush Well good luck and have fun searching all that you do to add up those calorie burned. If you decide to do it. [mtdewgurl74]
Awesome link, thanks.. [zed_k4]

hi steph' to be honest i dont think we do burn any calories off as all we are doing is using our hands nothing else-littleowl [littleowl]

Wouldn't it be great if typing online burnt calories! I am sure it will burn some but I really couldn't tell you if this is true or how many! I will follow this discussion to try and find out though! xxx [mummymo]

After thinking about that... I am wondering how it would... I mean the only thing really moving are your fingers and I know for a fact mine haven't gotten any smaller... They are the same chunky fingers I've had sense well I can't remember... lol.. Maybe in arm motion but than again you are going to really have to move them in order to actually get a work out.. Know what I mean? That answer I'm not so sure of... Hopefully someone has an answer to this... [wisconsin26]

Breathing alone burns calories but not much! And typing, yes.. but its all part of the normal activities one does. Unfortunately in order to burn extra calories is to find time to do some rigorous exercise, even if its for 10 minutes, better than nothing! I totally understand how hard it is to find time. [mbs730]

Hi stephcjh, I have heard that typing does burn calories but the old way of typing with a typewriter burned a lot more calories then we do now typing with a computer keyboard. [kimlot]

hello stephcjh that is a great question. my answer to does typing online burn calories? yes, i think that everything that we do burns calories. even watching t.v.? i do not see how just sitting down watching t.v. burns calories like that. so i guess that typing, a person would burn so many calories do that as well. but if nothing else, it keeps your fingers limber. lol and your hands in shape. and i do not know if you could use one of those clickers used for walking for typing or not. good luck to ya on finding out how many calories typing burns. have a beautiful evening. [RLFinNash]

This was sure an attention getter. I was amazed to read the comments and find that you actually do burn calories while typing online. Sure put a smile on my face. But then I went to the site one of the comments recommended and it said for a 46 year old female at 155 - 0 calories were burned. I even tried it 4 times. NOT FAIR!!! Everyone else seems to burn them. Why can't I? [YorkieBear]

Your typing 15 hrs/day is not help you body. It's just excerise your finger your hole body is no doing work in my view. [a_robinnep]

If it is true, I would be very happy tp hear that. But I don't think we can burn lot calorie only by sitting in front of our computer. [nyumix]
We actually burn alot more calories than what we think, by typing. Darkwing posted a link for us to calculate just how many we burn. It is on the first page of this discussion. [stephcjh]

I think so..IT is and it can burn calories. But its not good also to stay more than two hours in front of the computer. i think so? [ciades]
Yes. We do burn calories while typing. I never sit here for two hours at a time though because I always have alot of work to get done around the house also. Check out page one and see the link that Darkwing provided for us to calculate how many calories we do burn by typing. [stephcjh]

I doubt it, they tell you not be seated all day but to get up and move around for exercise, typing is a seated behaviour so it really doesn't burn that many calories [winterose]
yes I said we burn some we burn calories just breathing but to lose weight, I checked several websites for you and they all say the same, it takes 3500 calories to burn off one pound, and remember if you eating all day you can't say well in a month I burned off that much to lose a pound, you have to count all your food calories that go into your body [winterose]

I Never thought of that before!!! Burning calories while typing!!!!!! I guess yes.. our hands especially fingers get very tired.. and more so, long before read one article about buring calories, They mentioned how many calories we burn on doing following activity. and typing is excercise for our fingers, so i feel typing definately, helping us to burn few calories.. [childangel]
Yep. We do burn calories when typing. go to page one of my discussion. Darkwing gave us a link to figure out how many we burn by typing. [stephcjh]

It will make little difference to me how many calories I use when typing at my keyboard because I always eat more when I'm indoors. I worked in offices for many years and when I changed career I lost weight because I was no longer sitting at a desk all day. When I ended that career I had to find other ways to keep fit and now I try to burn calories, away from my computer, as much as I can during the day. [paid2write]
I try to work at the computer and get other things done around the house too but alot of times i am sitting her working and always thinking about food, it seems. I need to find something to do to stop thinking about food while working at home online. Maybe I will try to chew more gum again. [stephcjh]

yes but only callories in your hands :) [gukguks]
LOL. that sounds logical but I would be down to nothing but bones if that was the case. I type alot every day. I should have alot of muscle in my hands by now. [stephcjh]

hi i don't think typing burns any calories ... even if it does its negligible amount so do be bothered about that. But i know a trick .... see when u sit if u sit straightly you will lose calories ... of course you will not sit straight all the day ... and when you try to you will automatically start to bend. Here is the solution ... Tie a belt tight enough to your abs so that whenever you bend its will be uncomfortable so you will straighten up. Do it for an hour or two as u like.(even more you can do if you have patience) [brucekaushik]
Yeah. Typing does burn some calories. Darkwing gave us a link on the first page of my discussion so we can figure up just how many for ourselves. I try to stay mvong while sitting here by moving my legs around and up and down. I never just sit here. I always have alot to do around the home too. [stephcjh]

lol oh no thats not fair! I need to gain weight, not lose even more energy like this! i thought typing was like the best way to get fat since one just sits on their butt all the time!! lol nothing wrong with sitting on one's butt, i do that myself like 18 hours per day so no problem lol but...mpf i will have to eat more chocolate then! now if only i could pay for it LOL okay i know, i will use mylot money to get myself more chocolate :P [JoMarch]
lol thank youuuu i could do with some of that lol *hugs* i hope typing helps you lose your weight then if thats what you need :) [JoMarch]

Of course you'll burn calories for typing. You burn calories will doing nothing but breathing! Will you burn a LOT of them? I don't think so ... [Ldyjarhead]

Hi Doll I guess it must burn some. Maybe if you typed walking in place or something. They had something on tv about offices where the workers stood up and walked on treadmills while working. oxxoxoxoxoxo [raydene]

I am sure that typing cannot burn too many calories but there are other things you can do while sitting at your computer to AVOID gaining extra weight from just sittting around. Drinking tons of water as someone else suggested is one thing, as well as working your muscles, squeeze and release them over and over again will help with your muscle tone and burn a few calories also [gopats]

Nah it won't burn too many calories. But everything you do does burn calories. Just some activites burn more calories than others. A pedometer thing would not work for typing, it counts steps as your walking and the calories you burn while doing that. Try taking a five to ten minute break every other hour or so and stretch or do some light exercises like squats or yoga/pilates. [jezzikabret]

i would imagine that many hours must burn some.. i know i get hungry after awhile working online. all i can think of is maybe checking a calorie chart for things like rotating at the waist.. [scarlet_woman]

I know they say that sleeping even burns calories so I assume just about anything you do in a day burns calories but some are so low that anything you eat probably outweighs the calories lost during very inactive activities. I am at my computer a lot as well doing ptc sites and other things and I really don't think I'm doing much more for my body then making my wrists sore:) [shaggin]

Yes you do burn calories but very minimal...You burn calories doing ANYTHING actually but HOW MUCH you burn varies of coure from activity to activity..Regardless though, every little bit helps right.... [Ravenladyj]

you actually burn more calories when you engage your brain, have you noticed that you consume more when you do more of study or learning so in my opinion youi have nothing to worry about when it come to calories but please try to let your muscles relax because typing require a long time of sitting that btenses up your muscles try taking some good walking for some time everyday it helps a lot [BYOLA2871]

you burn calories just by sitting and breathing. but enough to lose weight? You need something more aerobic, and using the whole body. I am living proof. I have also found that its all about finding something you like to do like Installing Garden Filters then it wont seem so bad. I became disabled and in the last two years completely wheelchair-bound. Before that, I was an avid exerciser, and could keep at a healthy weight. Now?? I have to drastically cut down on my food intake so I don't gain any more... [fec139]

I doubt it will burn that much calories. I think it is the getting up and wondering what is going on, getting that snack, going for a walk, etc. that will burn more calories. Reason I am saying this is that when I was working in an office in my twenties, I developed a real spread along the bottom, and now my waist has caught up to that. Oh and tapping your foot up and down does seem to burn some more, but i do not know how much. [suspenseful]

Why?!!! only 29 calories per hour?! so if we sit around all day max we could burn is about 300-400 calories depending on how much you sit around and move your fingers! he he maybe in these 15 hours that you sit in front of the computer, you need to get up once in a while... get some water and then go back do some more typing. he he [chiyosan]
LOL. I don't sit for 15 hours and type. I am a wife and a mother and have lots of other things to do while I am working online. Typing does burn a few calories and that is nice to know because I need all of the exercise I can get and earn all at the same time with all of my websites. [stephcjh]

Hello Stephcjh! Siting in one place for a long period of time doesn't actually help burn calories. The best way to burn calories is to workout atleast thrice a week if one can't make it on a daily basis. Happy myloting! [chase07]

I dont think typing burn calories, even if yes it could be almost negligible... Its better to take a break and walk for some time, atleast for quarter an hour [s2a2n2]
ok...but it should be less... [s2a2n2]

We burn calories in everything we do. Just something require more energy than others. :) Good luck with your calorie burning quest. [luvingmygirls]
Thanks. Yea I saw the link and my husband and I were looking at some of the calories you can burn for certain activities. [luvingmygirls]

I think it won't really help much beside helping your fingers to built up so muscles yea . [Sir_bobby88]

yaa sure it burns calories but the amount is very less we can neglect it.. this is based on my personal exprience .... [tapusforu]

Well you can't lose that much that is for sure unless you are standing up and marching at that the same time. You could keep some dumbells next to your computer and while you are reading something on the computer instead of sitting still do some upper body exercises with the dumbells. Tone your butt and stomach by tightening and releasing the muscles. You will burn a few more calories and by toning up your muscles you will become a more efficient fat burner. [ladym33]

Minimally, I guess yes. Every activity we engage in, even taking exams (surpriseeee!) actually burns calories. As indeed even when we do nothing (technically that is not possible because our every movements are actually require burning some amount of calories, however minimal), we still burn calories. That being said, I think it's not a way to healthily living a lifestyle though. We cannot substitute a 15hour typing with the necessary amount of exercise with which we supposedly engage in. How about a few stretches or walking round the house while taking a break every hour or two on your heavy typing sessions. I guess that would help, pal. [kulaskulasito]

I am on here all day and I am finding at night my blood sugar goes way down in spite of having a decent dinner so must be burning more calories than I thought just tyyping. for me I have to stop and fix typos every little bit so must use up some energy. I know I have to have a snack before I go to bed every night. [Hatley]

I am afraid friend but typing does not burn much calorie. For good health you have to take time out. [rb200406]

I hope to lose some typing. So far the scales havent budged for me.LOL.Its hard to imagine that you can lose weight with typing but I am sure are fingers, hand and arms are getting excercise.Myabe other parts of our bodies. [Carrie26]

oh how i so wish it did burn callories but i think not lol sex swimming and fear do so i guess thats what i need blessed be [ESKARENA1]

it must stephcjh as I often get low blood sugar later in the evening when I type all evening and then have to have a snack. I am a diabetic like a lot of other mylotters and have to watch what i eat so often I am] too good and do not eat quite enough. so a light snack and then I am just fine again. [Hatley]

NO. Typing is not going to burn a lot of calories. To type, you are sitting at a computer, which means you are sedentary. You are barely burning any calories at all, at least none that really add up to much. So don't get your hopes up that you can lose weight while sitting on your duff staring at a computer screen. Ever heard of the "secretary's spread" or "sedentary spread"? Same issue here. If you spend much of your day sitting and typing, you probably need to increase your exercise regimen, or decrease your calorie intake or both. [cassidy22]

If you go to this site: http://www.fitday.com/WebFit/burned/calories_burned_Typing_electric_manual_or_computer.html and type in your weight, it will tell you. According to them, a 135 lb person will burn 29 calories an hour. Other sites list "sitting and typing" (not just typing), and they generally say in the area of 100 to 140 calories, depending on average-level weights. We burn some calories just by sitting, but it's using the large muscles that burn the most calories. Here's a good link too: http://health.yahoo.com/fitness-overview/interactive-tool-how-many-calories-did-you-burn/healthwise--tx4394.html That site says a 135 lb person burns 55 calories just by lying down but being awake. [LisaHW]

Yeah you burn calories whenever you move. But from typing you won't burn many calories so don't expect to loss any weight over it. I've heard of companies installing tredmills for people to walk on while typing! Now I think that is pretty cool. [Alex42692]

typing only causes fatigue and more backpains for me. it is not easy.do not expect much from it. calories can be burnt only with some strainful works and exercises. [golvine]

I think you can burn calrioes while you sleep. That sounds crazey but it is true. I guess the key from what I understand in order to lose weight you must eat less eat better and exercise as much as you are able to. Do not burn yourself out because than you will not exercise.Back when I sold Affordable real esate I would burn 100s everyday. I would also stay away from pop or soda it has empty calories. See I gave up the pop but I have been drinking it again and that is bad for me because I do not want to gain all my weight back again. Water is really good for you too so add that to your diet as well.If you can Burn Calories by typing someone needs to come up with a new keyboard called the O-Matic. Take care and I hope this helps. PS thanks for sharing this info about typing burning the fat too! Happy mylotting to you as well. happy [momtrying2makeit]

I think so because it is also a physical activity and any kind of activity burns calories. Even chewing itself can already burns calories. It also makes me sweat.Lol!lol [frinces]

I was reading the replies to your discussion here and I must say I'm impressed. I've learned another new thing here, and didn't know at all that typing could really burn some calories. If that is so, then I don't need to head on swimming so much, LOL.. However, I believe that is just so awesome. I need those exercises to tone up. Thanks for this discussion, it's great and I've found some interesting links as well. [zed_k4]

Isn't that funny?! Interestingly enough, we burn calories just living. I had a desk job and found a few ways to burn calories at my desk....one of the fun/funny ones was taking one of those big exercise balls and sit/balance on it instead of a chair. If you are really looking to burn some get out and do some trout just make sure you have Trout Fishing Supplies. I would take my chair and twist, kind of like those twist chairs they were advertising on tv a few months ago, if you twist and just move from the waist down, you can actually feel it working. Also, to figure out how many calories I burnt throughout the day and how many calories I'd consumed, I faithfully followed the plan from prevention.com Have fun! (Did you know you even burn calories when you sleep and brush your teeth?!?! If I burned calories when I brush your teeth it would make me so happy i would sing in a Musicals and Music are our lives show.[mzz663]

Hi typing is nothing but form of work, energy is spent, so there is definitely burning of calories, a form of exersise for the fingers and wrists lol Thanks for this post Arun [arun2009]

Almost every physical activity should burn some calories. While typing the muscles of your hands are working so it is a form of excercise. [VANILLAREY]

Hmmm. This one gives me curiosity. How much calories are we burning while typing? Since we still do physically working by using our hands and fingers, still we are burning calories but unsure how much and if it is really enough than exercising. I still believe though that we still need to exercise from time to time to work out the other parts of our body. [Aylward]

Personally you would think that our typing here and other places online would burn some calories other than just sitting in a chair all day doing nothing. It may burn a few put not naer as many as you would burn putting up Home Accents and Decor all day.I guess the only way we would know if it was measured somehow and then we could see. Or eat only things that help us maintain our weight and see if that is a factor or if we need to do other things as well. Since most of us who spend a lot of time online are also constantly munching on something it would be interesting to see what works best for sure. [KrauseHome]

LOL 15 hours thats too much, any sort of labor needs expenditure of energy and certainly burns calories, i don't know how to estimate how much is that. i don't agree it is equivalent to walking, but good exercise for fingers, wrists and for the arm as a whole. i too have no time to walk, but i have a device, marketed as 'walker', here you keep your feet on it, switch it on and it shakes your leg as if you are walking Arun [arun2009]

I should think that typing is at least physical activity of a modest sort. However, I wouldn't expect it to burn a lot of calories. Even so, I heard that there is a difference between people who fidgit and who hold still in terms of calories burned. Apparently, if you jump you leg up and down awhile you sit at the computer you can actually burn more calories. Again, I cannot but imagine that the difference must be very slight. [DaddyOfTheRose]
