as I was leaving the office . It came from the vicinity of the pool. So I rushed there and much to my surprise saw an owner giving mouth to mouth rescucitation on a puppy. Dogs are not allowed but they had not one to leave the dog with so I turned a blind eye as they clean up after the puppy - and it is such a small little puppy.
Evidently the puppy had fell into the pool and the owner's daughter jumped in and rescued it but it was not breathing so hence the mouth -to mouth bit.
I thought about this on the way home. The puppy did recover but I was not sure if I could have done that to a puppy. Would you have done mouth to mouth resucitation on a dog?

responses and comments:
I'm glad the puppy was okay. I don't own a dog, and actually don't like them much because I was bit when I was a baby, pretty badly too, I still have horrible scars from it. But I do own 4 cats. I think if one of my cats were to fall into a pool and came out not breathing, I probably would give mouth to mouth. My cats are almost as special to me as my kids. [katsmeow1213]
First of all, you can't give mouth to mouth to a dog. You actully have to hold their mouth shut, and blow into their nose. Blowing into their mouth just won't work. On the flip side of the coin, allowing a dog into the pool area where there is a possibiity of them having 'accidents' opens the door to exposing innocent humans, including babies, to the germs and diseases contained in their feces. It's a health issue to the public, hence the rules of not permitting them in the pool area. [LuckyLadyD]
Absolutly without giving it a second thought I for sure would. What if dogs said "gee I don't know if I want to lead that blind person around or I don't know if I want to be a servicedog and open doors for someone in a wheel chair." What if they thought, lets just bite them instead. They are God's creatures.sad [muscles4me]
That's right muscles! See what was said by someone on the next page! How could anyone refuse to save one of God's creatures! [Opal26]
probably not, probably wouldn't have even thought about it. would have been more concerned about the child. [ANTIQUELADY]
It's difficult isn't it? I don't know that I would have thought to do it either. The daughter was o.k. she is a teenager and a good swimmer. Thank you for responding [cynthiann]
Hi ya cynthiann Hmmm, I'm really not sure. It does sound really gross but could you just stand by and let your dog die like that? Unless I was actually in that very situation I would just have to say that I simply just don't know! [Humbug25]
I agree with you a hundred percent. I don't know what I would do if it was my pet. Thank you for responding [cynthiann]
It sounds gross to give a dog mouth to mouth, but I guess since pets are like children to some people I could see how someone could do it. Glad to hear the puppy is alright. [lilybug]
I haven't, but if I absolutely had to I would. But as Lucy says, "augh, dog germs, get some disinfectant"... [dawnald]
It does sound gross but we don't know what we would do when it happened. I once gave mouth to mouth ona a young dead man who had drowned. I knew he was dead but I kept trying. He brought up copious amounts of water but i failed to revive him. I ddin't know him but just cried so hard. Afterwards people told me that they wouldn't do it in case he had HIV. I never thought of that - I just did it. I did get trested though, just as a precaution and am o.k. [cynthiann]
I would do that without a second thought. I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to do that for my family and animals. They are my life. I would be much more wary of performing that on a stranger. Although I would like to help and probably would. I have noticed the police and rescue services now use a special appliance before they perform mouth to mouth. Obviously these days there is the danger of being infected. Three cheers for the lovely girl who rescued the pup. [Anomalie]
If you read an earlier response of mine you will sethat I did do it for a stranger. The boy was in his teens and I tried so hard with no success. I would do it for my family wiothout a second thought but I don't know if I would have done it for my dogs (when I had dogs)I didn't know that a device is now being used. Thank you for responding [cynthiann]
I wouldn't hesitate to do it to a puppy. Puppy mouths are cleaner than humans. There are many humans who I wouldn't even think of giving mouth to mouth to. I'm glad she gave the puppy mouth to mouth. I'm surprised the puppy couldn't swim. Most dogs can. Lucky puppy to be alive. I gave mouth to mouth on a kitten who was born breach and wasn't breathing. It was a long hard birth. It took hours for the mother to finally expel the kitten out far enough for me to help pull it out the rest of the way. The kitten wasn't breathing, so I did mouth to mouth and it meowed like a good baby. Of course these things always seem to happen at night when the vet is sleeping. [TheCatLady]
Kitty is alive and doing well. That's all I cared about. [TheCatLady]
Hi cynthiann, I will to my dog but I am not sure if I can do it to another dog...I am just being honest here! ANyway, this is the first time I've heard about it..Glad that they save the dog!happyhappyhappy [checapricorn]
I don't think that I would never have thought to do this to a dog. she was pretty amazing to do it but it is one of those situations that you cannot predict what you will or won't do. Thank you for responding. I appreciate it and for being honest [cynthiann]
Ummmm I don't know if I would have been able to do this. I mean, I love dogs and I'm really glad he lived. They say that a dog's mouth is one of the cleanest things ever... but they lick their butts and their balls and I really just cannot imagine giving mouth to mouth to a dog! [coxjamir]
rolleyesI'm not going there! [cynthiann]
I would not. I do not regard even a cute puppy equal to a human, as this owner did. I am sure there are other ways to save the dog's life, like why not have a rubber tube inserted into the puppy's mouth and breathe into that. Also I am sure that people would look at me funny. [suspenseful]
As I said, people would look at me funny. Maybe the tube from a paper towel or gift wrap would work in a pitch. But I would not even do that. I mean regarding a puppy as equal to human? I would have watched the puppy more closely so he or she would not have gotten into the pool. [suspenseful]
I am glad that Puppy is ok. I think I would of tried to save the Puppy with mouth to mouth also. I am not a huge dog fan, but I do love animals and I think I would give help to them if they really needed it. [hildas]
No! I suppose I would not of thought about it really do do that. [hildas]
That is a very tricky question. I mean a puppy is a really nice cute fluffy animal. I can't stand to see it in pain. If it was dying like that then I would have probably done it. Or maybe not. It really depends on how I feel. But I would have been really hurt if it had died and I could have saved it's life. Again it's at 50/50 I may or may not do it. [zackyo7]
This is one of those things that you don't anticipate doing. I don't think that I would have thought about it. Thanks for responding [cynthiann]
Hey cynthiann! Of course I would have done mouth to mouth on a puppy! I don't know if I would have been able to do it right, but I sure would have tried! I forgot the part that you do instead of the nose pinching! I would have done anything I could to try to save a cat or a dog! I am an animal lover so I would not have hesitated! I am glad to hear that the puppy was ok! [Opal26]
+ The puppy was a Christmas gift and it is a cute small breed - the name escapes me at the moment. I am an animal lover too but I don't think that I would have thought to have done this. Duh [cynthiann]
Personally I am an animal lover. I have a dog, cat and a fish. I know that since I have spent my whole life around animals, I would probably do mouth to mouth if it was required to save my pets life, with exception of the fish cause I just don't see how that would be possible. I guess it would also have to do with wether or not it was my pet, I certainly wouldn't go around doing it on a strange animal. [CRIVAS]
Yes, most peole who responded said that they would have done it on their own pets but some would have done it to any animal. Thanks for responding [cynthiann]
Oh? hahah funny thing!! well, I don't know if I can do it.. resucitation to a puppy? I may find another way to save the puppy's life but not resucitation.happy [Bebs08]
I 'm sure that I would not have htought to have done this. Thaks for responding [cynthiann]
Interesting story. I'm from a ranching background so I've seen my father give mouth-to-mouth to a still-born calf, which I thought was fascinating, especially when it saved the calf's life. If needed I could definitely do CPR on an animal, but I'm surprised a puppy would need rescusitating after falling in water. I thought they could swim. I guess this was a VERY small puppy. I'm also impressed someone nearby knew to give CPR and new HOW to give CPR to a puppy. [TheCasualReporter]
Your father is an amazing man to do this. The puppy was only about 7 or 8 weeks old and is very tiny. It had definitely stopped breathing - I was there. she did it for several minutes before the puppy started to breather on his own. They then took her to a vet to get her checked out and she was o.k. Thaks you for responding [cynthiann]
I'm glad that the puppy is alive.. I love dogs even though I was bitten by a dog when I was still a kid.. I have 2 dogs at home and I took care of them when they were still a puppy.. Through your discussion, I don't know if I can do the same thing as the owner did to her dog no matter how I love my dog.. Of course, I also feel some disgust doing that kind of action.. I know that it might save the life of the dog but then I know that there are still another way on how to save my dog.. I just can't do it even though I love my dog so much... Its really disgusting you know! happy [kissie34]
I htink that she acted instinctively without thinking. I know that I would never have thought of doing this. Thaks for responding [cynthiann]
We see others dog as a dog, but when it comes to our own, we see them more than a dog. Dog is also a living thing and we get attached to it when it lives with us. I would accept that if it was mine, because if not i am going to loose it forever. and everyone know how important a life is to all. AND I SALUTE THE GIRL FOR DOING SO. VERY GOOD EXAMPLE FOR ALL AROUND THE WORLD. Very much thank to you for posting this. Great job! [nzalheart]
Thank you for responding in sucha positive way. [cynthiann]
I heard say a little girl kissed her puppy cat and got a bad fever as a result. I think puppy's mouth is not so clean as someone thinks. I'll turn to a vet in this case I think. [EdithKoppa]
The vet was at least 10 miles away and I think she did this to save the puppy's life. I'm not sure that I could have done it.Thak you for responding [cynthiann]
I doubt whether or not I would do mouth-to-mouth rescutitation to a dog, but I also feel that if you have immense love to your pets, then anything is possible. Love is something great and has the quality to move mountains. When your loved one, be it human or animal- it is more than natural to completely forget what you are doing and become absorbed in the act of saving. [Frederick42]
I agree with you here and you have expressed it so beautifully. Many acts are done in the name of love. You just do what you have to do.I leant tyhis during my husband's long illness. Thank you so very much [cynthiann]
Thank God, the owner was there and knew how to administer mouth to mouth. I do not think I would be able to give an animal mouth to mouth. First of all I do not know how to do it effectively. I would want to because I love animals and would not like to see an animal die. Kudos to the owner [sudalunts]
Some how I never even thought that mouth to mouth was an option so I don't think it would have come to me to do it. Yes, her aughter was very brave and quick acting to do it. Thanls for responding [cynthiann]
I am glad to hear that the dogs was okay. Honestly, I am sure I would do it for my own dog in a second. But I am not so sure I would for a dog I was not familiar with. [makingpots]
Most people have your point of view too. I think that it may be something that you would do instantaneously - without thinking about it. Thank you for responding. [cynthiann]
I probably would because I feel connected to the dog and cared for him. So I would have done as much to save him. [chunijole]
Yes, so many things are don in the name of love. But would you have thought of doing mouth to mouth to an animal? [cynthiann]
Yes I would. If the dog is my own, and I know that he is a clean dog i would do it. I would put a towel or something around his lips even my own tshirt and i would give a mouth to mouth resuscitation. I would try to do anything to make my dog back to life. c) ronaldinu 2009 - the more people I meet-the more I love my dog [ronaldinu]
I've noticed the way you end your posts before today and it always makes me smile. A cloth to use is a good idea. Thank you for responding [cynthiann]
HI Cynthiann: Yeah I'd be right there doing what I could to save that little puppy any animal as far as that goes; I love all animals always have; the poor little thing and what a brave little girl too , hope they all are more careful next time! [dreamweaverjan]
I thought that you would respond in this way. You are a caring soul. Oh yes, they are sure to be more caring now. Blessings [cynthiann]
I actually work at a veterinary clinic, and have done cpr on dogs a few times. On a puppy, you would actually do mouth-to-nose, so you don't over inflate the lungs. It wouldn't be a terrible thing, just as long it doesn't have intestinal parasites (which many puppies do). If you know how to do it correctly, it isn't that bad. I've blown into my own dog's nose many times just as joke. You really don't have to go mouth-to-mouth. It's not as bad as it seems, but mouth-to-mouth is kind of funny. I definitely prefer mouth-to-nose. [StephyJ_83]
Thank you for the welcome. I look forward to meeting new people on here. I completely understand what you said about emotions running high. I'm just glad the puppy was okay. [StephyJ_83]
I'm glad the puppy is okay...and it was nice of you to look the other way because of the puppies presence. I would ABSOLUTLY give mouth to mouth if I could save a puppy's life...or a dogs, doesnt have to be a baby. In fact, there are a lot of animals I would save with this technique if I had too... There is a video I've seen of a man who gave mouth to mouth to a newborn deer, and it lived! It's mother had been hit by a car, and she had to be humainly euthanized at the side of the road. She was carrying two babies; one did not make it...the other was saved by this mans cpr. I would have done the same in a HEARTBEAT! [LilyoftheThorns]
Yeah, I don't think a lot of people would think to do CPR on an animal; but it does work just as well on them as it does on us :) And I DO understand why someone wouldn't want to...but I wouldn't be able to just sit by if I could save a life. Thank you :) [LilyoftheThorns]
Hello I am so glad that the puppy is ok. I would do whatever I could to resitate my dog or someone else's. They are like family to me. I have a boy cat and I don't know what I would do without him. Have a great day. [patriciaqualls]
Aww that Parrot story is so cute and so sad!! I'm sorry you lossed your friend Cy :( I defeniatly know how terrible it is too lose a pet; I have lost to many in the past, and the present!! :(( [LilyoftheThorns]
