One of the things that I liked about my last employment was the holiday entitlement. I received 30 days paid holiday a year, plus another 10.5 public holidays. In fact I often didn't manage to take all my holiday and would carry anything up to 9 days over into the next year, which simply made it harder to take all my leave. What is your annual holiday entitlement? Do you manage to take it all, or does it accumulate never to be used?

I've been there just over a year and I have a week coming. My daughter is coming to visit this summer so I'm sure I'll take it then. Probably sometime in June when she first arrives although she'll probably be here a month or so. I can hardly wait. [kbourgerie]
Yes, thats it. One week a year and yes it is paid. [kbourgerie]
When I was working, I had worked long enough that I got almost a month's vacation. However, for most of the time that I was there, I was the only one in the lab, and my boss was always telling me that it wasn't a good time for me to take off, when I wanted to take a week off. He did roll what ever time I didn't manage to take over to the next year, though. By the time I left there last June, I had accumulated almost 8 weeks vacation. What time I didn't manage to take before I left, I was paid for on my last check. I had not expected that, at all. *L* When I had worked long enough to take only one week off, I thought it would be fantastic to take a month off every year, go do something with my family, and relax for a bit, then go back to work all fresh and ready for another year. Finding the time to take off and do nothing work related turned out to be harder than I thought! [thebohemianheart]
When I left I still had a 4 weeks left, but they only paid me for two! Which wrankles a little as I earned them so why should I have lost them? But that's in the past now. It was good that they did pay you for yours too. But I have met those bosses. I worked to live, not the other way round! [p1kef1sh]
hiya Pikey At the moment I'm on 365 days annual leave blink what more can I say? lol [Aliceinwebland]
That's true. This week I have done 12 hours Alice. [p1kef1sh]
Holiday?confused Do you mean Billie Holiday?blink Naw, I never got to take her anywhere...but that lady could sing!!!happy [MYKLJ999_VERSION_2]
They were going to be married Alice. But then she fell of a cliff on Holiday!!! [p1kef1sh]
That is terrific! You'd be hard pressed to find that kind of vacation time here in the USA, at least not until you've worked for that employer for a long time. My last employer was a major US bank, and they allowed 5 days per year, including sick time. After 5 years it was increased to 10 days. What the increments were after that I never found out, since I don't work there anymore. There were 5 paid public holidays, but since I worked for a call center, we had to work them. [catdla1]
All those stressed and tired people working...no wonder they can't balance books. Also consider that many of these people would earn more working at a fast food restaurant or discount store. Not to be totally negative however, for those who stuck it out there was great job security (high turnover rate), and reasonably good advancement opportunities. [catdla1]
happyWe have 15 days which is mandated by our labor laws. And then our own institution grants employees who have been in service for 10 - 15 years a 5-day leave with pay, 15 and above- 10 day-leave with pay. If you're not able to use these, then they'll be converting it into cash. Happy mylotting. [Jenaisle]
They are talking about mandating 28 days here too, for full-time workers Jen. There's a lot of oppositin from employers predictably enough. [p1kef1sh]
Wow, you have some great employment there! I've never had a job that offered a paid vacation or paid sick days. Most jobs give you a weeks vacation after a year and you have to be there 2-3 years for more than that. I'm kind of on permanent vacation with the employment situation here. So it's like a working vacation with a very flexible schedule. [dragon54u]
Most people work to live but some workaholics live to work. While most nations regard vacations as an essential part of life, time to spend with family and unwind, vacations here are few and far between for the average worker. Take teachers; on their summer vacations they usually take jobs instead of relaxing so that they can make ends meet. Others work during their vacations, too, when they get them. I hope you have a lot of fun! [dragon54u]
Here in Canada, when you start a new job, you are entitled to 2 weeks paid holidays per year, but usually only after working there for a year. If you stay on with the same company, the time allottment increases. I know some people that have been with their company for a very long time and they are entitled to 6 or 8 weeks paid vacation each year. Myself, right now, being a self-employed farmer, I don't get any paid vacation. I have to just decide when I want or can afford to take time off and hire someone to do my work while I am away. What I did last summer, was I just took my 'vacation time' a few hours at a time. I would make sure there was plenty of feed and water in for the sheep and take off fishing for the day with the spouse. But it also meant that I had to make up for it by doing a bit of extra work before and after my 4-8 hrs of 'vacation time'. [AnnieOakley1]
The great thing about being your own boss Annie is that you don't clock watch, worry about making someone else's deadlines etc. I suspect that you are automatically in a happier frame of mind. Even though the stress must be enormous at times - so are the rewards. [p1kef1sh]
Hi p1key, Gosh with all those holidays that you used to get, your last employment must be a good firm to have worked for, I'll luck if I get three weeks off in a year and when the bank holidays were taken out of our annual leave, they were really tight, thank goodness I am not working for them anymore. Hugs. Tamara xxxxx [tamarafireheart]
We did have good conditions Tamara. No doubt about it. XXXX [p1kef1sh]
I get 30 a year too, not including public holidays. I always use them up and very rarely have any left to carry over. I do like me holidays [thezone]
Good for you. That's what they are there for. [p1kef1sh]
my current job doesn't have any leave, no holidays, no vacations, no sick time - I don't work, I don't get paid [ElicBxn]
I don't even get CHRISTMAS!!! What a bi...pain [ElicBxn]
When I worked for AOL, P1ke, we got about 9-11 paid holidays a year. I was at a point where I got 4 weeks a year vacation pay. The vacation pay was set up so that one could carry a week over to the next year, but otherwise had a "Use It or Lose It" policy. I never had so much to do that required my taking all my vacation time, so I always ended with a surplus carried over. I never lost anything though. When I lost my job I had roughly three weeks vacation time that I had not taken, but I was paid for it. Yay me! I don't have ANY benefits at the job I now have. I work, I get paid for it. The only good thing is that the company does pay time-and-a-half for anything over 40 hours per week. Otherwise, no holidays, no vacation, no 401(k), no healthcare, NADA! Memo to self: Use It or Lose It sucks ... especially if there is a crisis and you are needed to work, only to lose time that you've EARNED. (C) 2009 RJScott [rjscott]
Absolutely RJ. Use it or lose it. When I left I had 4 weeks owing. I got paid for two. That was a hard leson learned. [p1kef1sh]
My husband's a teacher, so he has plenty of holidays - he's saving them up in order to have an earlier retirement. However, sick leave entitlements end up being wasted if you don't use them - he once managed over 20 years without taking one sick day, and unfortunately, they will all be lost. My son (an apprentice) is told by his employer when he's to take holidays. He doesn't particularly mind, but it's a bit of a cheek! [guybrush]
If you're going to crack up, do it in a spectacular fashion, I've always said! I'm waiting for my husband to crack - it's probably imminent. He's trying to hold on in order for his superannuation to be of maximum benefit ... but in my opinion, you're better off leaving while you still have your health (and sanity). I definitely think you did the right thing! [guybrush]
Wow!~ My wife is asking what sort of job is that?! Haha!~lol30 days of paid holiday a year!~ Oh how I wishwhistleWe have about 20 days of public holidays here as we come from a multi-racial country plus the standard entitlement of about 14 days. Well, but since we're self-employed, sometimes we even forget that it's a public holiday until someone reminds us or until we try to phone up our suppliers & find that no one is picking up at the other enddoh [zweeb82]
Self-employment is a double edged sword. You have to work hard and scarifice things, but hopefully uyou reap a good reward in the end. [p1kef1sh]
wow!!we dont have that one...we have fundays but we dont that one...ehehe!!!but we have leave which are paid...total of paid leaves are 25 days a year... [pitstryke]
That's not bad at all. [p1kef1sh]
P1ke- I hate our sytem over here to be honest. As a teacher, it's fine, but where my husband works, well it's typical of most places. He gets 2 weeks, but if he goes over his sick days he must take vacation days. So, he had to take his vaction when our daughter had her surgery so he could be there with us. Go figure. So, what are you going to do right? It does not roll over in most jobs. Generally most over here it's a use it or lose it situation. Even in teaching it's like that. At my last teaching post we were "encouraged" to call in sick and use our sick days and personal time. Typically, I got two weeks vacation as well as a teacher. And no, contrary to popular belief I never had my summers off as a teacher, I generally was teaching summer school. Namaste-Anora [Anora_Eldorath]
I am a firm believein the work/life balance. The graveyards are full of indispensible people! Of course we should put in a conscientious job. But we do it better if we are properly rested both physically and mentally. I did work for a good employer in the respect of the hours and conditions that we had. I think that in Western society we have developed an attitude that says that work is GOOD! But it isn't if that is all that we live for and more and more people seem to be seeing it that way. [p1kef1sh]
I earn 8 hours of paid time off every two weeks. So basically one day for every two weeks i work. Hmmm i should have about 123 hours as of today. They carry over and when i accumulate so many i start to lose them. That bothers me. Why not go ahead and pay me for them??? Why do they just disappear??? [pheonixstar1982]
I know and the craziest part is that my boss is always asking when i am going to take a vacation, yet when i want just one day off, its like moving a mountain to get a replacement in if our regular replacement cant make it. So i finally told him one day yeah ill take a vacation when you find someone to relieve me for the time off. [pheonixstar1982]
hi last year my family are going into hyderabad that palce very naice.. and very peace fully taht day very happy to spend my family [manasaj]
I would love to visit Hyderabad. Thank you and welcome to myLot. [p1kef1sh]
We get one month recreation holiday with full gross salary after every three years.Other than this we get 33days earned leave with gross salary. But at a time maximum 10 mdays holiday can be enjoyed. But it's subject to approval.Receation holiday can be enjoyed part by part.Nut payment will be made at a time. [bhanusb]
That doesn't sound too bad Bhanusb. [p1kef1sh]
Do you know, I am not actually sure of that! Where I work is closed for 4 weeks of the year I think so I get those weeks off. Then a bit more on top. I know it isn't a lot because I've not been there for very long. I'm trying to get back to college and work as a teaching assistant so then I can have 3 months holiday every year! [pumpkinjam]
Well, of course not JUST that but it's not a bad incentive! [pumpkinjam]
I think this is not difficult, you calculate good time, the accumulated vacation time and public holidays cumulative time up on the list. [ada547612]
hi P1ke when reading your headline of the discussion I hoped you would share some of your summer holiday plans with us..... lol...... We have 30 days vacations here and last year I had a herniated disc and so was over 6 months off work. Thank God they revised the vacation policy a bit just in time when I needed to take care of my old vacation days of 2007 (!). I still had 6 or 7 days left of these. Sooooo now the vacation days of 2008 have to be used up till End 2009 or they expire and I am sure able to manage that all right. Wow you had had PTO I don't get very much at all right now you should ride your bike and shop for Mountain Bike Supplies on days off. [book1962]
You too my friend. XX [p1kef1sh]
In my country, the standard holidays granted to a full-time employee is 4 weeks a year, paid. Some industries provide 6 weeks paid and some also add on a loading percentage so you end up with a little bit of a bonus when you take your holiday's as well. As for now, I have no idea what my actual allocation is, but I'm fortunate enough to be able to take whatever time I want whenever I want and will still be paid. The problem though, is that apart from a day here and there to tend to boring stuff like visa renewals etc, I don't take leave at all. I think you will be happy if you take the time out to look at some Vintage Artwork and buy of of it when on break. It's been more than 5 years since I've taken an actual holiday! I don't recall taking a sick day in all that time either. [James72]
That's pretty much how I ended up James. I could coe and go pretty much as I wanted. Apart from the last 6 months I had little sick leave either. But holidays do need to be taken. Come over here for a few days if you like. I'll quickly drive you mad! LOL. [p1kef1sh]
I only have 15 days holiday per without legal holidays and declared holidays. Did you say that on your 10 days off you stocked up on Anime Art? My 15 days holiday will always be consumed before the year ends. I feel exhausted because we have 2 days off a week and only entitled of 15 days vacation leave and we don't avail the legal holidays and proclaimed holidays. [joyce423]
I can appreciate how tiring it must be. I suppose that we have to make the most of those days that we do have. [p1kef1sh]
My life is a permanent holiday these days :-) I'm very lucky that I consider my day to day 'work' holiday! Some might consider it hard work, but it's certainly better than sitting in an office and dealing with office politics as I used to. [GreenMoo]
I listen to The Boss talk about the office olitics where she works and thank heavens that I don't have any of that now. It can be a complete crusher! [p1kef1sh]
I didn't get a 'scheduled' vacation from an employer until I'd been in the work force for.................holy cow, now that I think about it, I've NEVER had one! Well if you go anywhere on these days off just don't use one of the Antique Maps maps lol I'm a workaholic. But then I had a sweet deal. I worked for 6 to 8 months, then took 2 or 3 off to travel. They were working 'holidays', but it was the best way to go! LOL [sparkofinsanity]
If you purr nicely, I might have you in the house!! LOL. [p1kef1sh]
I get a really measly 365 days a year! David was just about to get his holiday entitlement increased by a few days for longer service but although he was supposed to finish up on Friday coming his bosses have decided that as of 12 o'clock on Friday just past he no longer has to return to work - apart from in a couple of weeks he has to go in and hand back security badge etc! So that is it the manufacturing from the place I used to work no longer exists! He is having a holiday this week and he better enjoy it as I don't care what he does but he isn't going to be here all day every day annoying me! Lets of time to for Music and Movies that would be the life. lol xxx [mummymo]

LOL You share very , very well and you make all your adoring fans share you too! I am sure things will work out fine here - wish I was still drunk at least it kills pain! lol xxx [mummymo]
paid holiday is one of the things i like about my job too. i get 35 days of paid leave to be taken any time. this number will increase even more when i reach a certain number of years in service. it's really great to have this number of leave as it gives me the freedom to do things i like. i love traveling so having a lot of leave is important. also, i am able to bring my parents to the doctor and run errands without having to worry too much. Boy if I had this many days off of work I would spend all day at the Virtual Gift Mall looking for cool items. i used to accumulate my leave entitlement but used it all up two years ago. i was studying part time, working full time and getting a new place all at the same time. i used most of my leave on supervising the renovation process to ensure that nothing major goes wrong. winkwink [applefreak]
yes it's a pretty good job looking at the paid leave. however, the pay isn't that great. thing is, i value time more than money. that's why i've been in this job for more than ten years. lollol [applefreak]
My hubby calls his holiday and vacation time the time he can't work in winter months so he is off work for months sometimes he is always raring to get back to work and out of the house when it starts to thaw enough to work again. [mtdewgurl74]
Well, he is having some health issues right now and the pollen isn't helping none. He works outside so he won't be working just yet he is making a appointment ot see a doctor to get something for his allergies since he smothers and can't breath when he goes outside. Are you a person who would work from your 3G iPhone when taking PTO?I can't even have a window open and for a few days their thought I lived in a oven..thankfully it cooled back down to the 70's.. [mtdewgurl74]
I get nothing as a stay at home mom. [camomom]
That would be so nice. I don't know anyone that wants to watch 3 kids at one time though, especially at their ages. It's okay though, it was my choice to stay home with them. I'll get "me time" in a couple years when they are all in school. [camomom]
I have already gone on a summer holiday for twenty days.I went before my exam and enjoyed my time there. The surrounding was calm and good.I never took books to study over there. When i was working in a company then i never took leave as i had just joined it.A one months leave is very good to get refreshed and again go for work.happyhappy [vicky30]
That sounds great. Thanks for stopping by. [p1kef1sh]
