What Would You Do If You Were Laid Off ,do You Have A Backup Plan

In these times when recession is on everyone's lips and many companies have only one knee jerk response to surviving the financial storm "fire, this must be a pertinent question on many person's mind. Consequently I am wondering how many persons actually have a backup plan in place to mitigate against the effects of being out of job. Would you for example start a home internet business ,or go back to school to do a short course ?..these are just some of the options that are on my mind

I work online anyway, so I'm not employed by any one person. I earn on PTC sites. I am a member of so many of them that it is unlikely that they will all close at the same time. I also work on a publishing website and earn a couple of $s a day by people viewing my work and commenting on it. I am also a member of many paid forums like this one, which mean that I always have another alternative if one of the sites that I work on goes down or goes through a bad patch. [GemmaR]

Hi ronnyb, I agree that we need a backup plan since we are now living in this critical times hard to deal with. Where I live, we have seen big companies shutting down here and there. Sadly,my favorite cousin, who is a Mechanical Engineer, who belongs to a then-strong company unimaginably lost his job too!sad As of now,the company where I work doesn't pose any threat yet for any shutting down of laying off some employees, (thank God!) However, being a parent, my initial concern is the welfare of my twin daughters. Aside from my regular job income, I also joined an MLM company as a side-line. It offers health products which are very effective to us. With my father's diabetes, my mom's advanced stage of Alzheimer, and my daughter's asthma, the first thing that comes to my mind is how effective these products are. And fortunately, the products work wonders to us! Online, aside from myLot, step-by-step, I am also uploading some videos, share some of my poems to other sites like Triond. Hope that with all these efforts, i can also make ends meets if we already crossed that bridge. Until then, I try so hard not to be anxious so much...work my best foot forward in dealing with financial crisis, and never stop praying. [margaux08]

Hi ronnyb! I do have a craft business right in my home. I am not working and I am a housewife. I realized that my income got less now since customers are not ordering souvenirs and tokens as often as they used to and if there will be orders, it is not that much anymore. Usually customers order a minimum of 50-100 pieces of souvenirs but since the 4th quarter of last year, customers only order less than 50 pieces of souvenirs from me. I am now trying to make other designs that will cost less and I am also on the look-out for new business opportunities that may have some potential to really succeed. Take care and have a great day! lovelots..faith [faith210]

I don't think that I would use the money to go and do a course. I would research the market and see if there are unusual thing that I could do to have an income. It is all about what you are passionate about. Things that one use to do as an hobby turn it into an income base. [kerriannc]

Having a backup plan has never occurred to me, since I've been a high school English teacher for 41 years. Cutbacks have made it impossible to live on my pay alone, however, so I have a umber of little things going on the internet. I used to have a company of my own, and I guess I'd hire somebody to do the selling for me, since I no longer have the good health needed to do it. [cobrateacher]

There are several back-up plans on my part. There is a huge amount of work in child daycare, so even if I lost my job here it wouldn't be that hard finding a new one. If I can't get my own group of kids filling in shifts for sick people, holidays or people who have had babies is also an option. When I still did that I had tons of work aswell. If somehow this wouldn't work I would look into other jobs related to educating and nurturing children. I am still in college studying to become a pedagogue (part time higher education), so I have no need to get back to school as I am still studying). Doing a short course beside my studies would be an option too if I really needed it to get a new job. [cyberfluf]

I was fired from a job last year because of new management and I didn't have a back up plan. Fortunately within three weeks I had three job offers. The one I took is all right and it helps to pay the bills but it isn't what I want to be doing in my future. I am already looking into starting my own business. I guess if I were to lose this job I would just have to try to start the business ASAP. [tammytwo]

well as a full time mom of 2, and housewife my job is always in demand, but they always forget to pay me...LMAO!! As it is, I havent worked in an office since Oct of 2001, got laid off right after 9/11 and got pregnant in 2002, so I have been a stay at home mom ever since.... I have been happy with it, but I also worked 3 jobs 7 days a week prior to getting laid off, so I was always use to having that paycheck every week, which I seriously miss. my way of getting back into the stream of things, and making some extra money for around the house is here...and that I just started this year so I havent really brought anything in yet... but I hope to make some good decisions this year and go from there....after all it is a start. I asked my husband about being made redundant, but he said my position is safe if I behave my self and keep on washing his socks. On a more serious note it is a worry, especially if you are over forty or have worked at a place for years.Friends of mine are being bullied on a daily basis so they lose their tempers and walk out, then the firm will not have to pay redundancy or anything. They all want to employ younger people then employ them on a short contracts,so they don't have to pay holidays or sick pay,it is a horrible place the working world these days.I suppose a college course or government retraining would be something worth looking into as being bored and out of work,is enough to make someone ill.As long as you can improve yourself you will have more to offer when the economy picks up.It is always wise to have a plan B to fall back on.xxx [suzzy3]

Hi ronnyb, I congratulate you for bringing this topic for discussion at the right time. I see many people, not bothering to save for rainy days.Even the birds save grains for the rainy days. Nor they have any back up plan in case of job loss. For their employers, they make the back up of all data s.But for their own future they have no back up. The recession has taught us a lesson to save for the future. So we must act and save for the future. Happy mylotting [muru1950]

If I lost my job, we'd be in so much trouble. I'm the only one working of the two of us right now. I don't know that I'd make enough money from unemployment to cover all of our bills. We'd probably end up having file bankruptcy or something. We're trying to do everything we can to avoid that. My husband is very close to being able to get his job back. Just gotta take it one day at a time. [CRSunrise]

If I got laid off, I would of course apply for unemployment, keep doing things like mylot to help a little even if it is a little bit. I would search professional websites like SPHS.org (southwestern pa human services) and look at the employment opportunities to see where I could go from here. [rmuxagirl]
