When Is The Best Time To Ask For A Salary Increase...

Have you ever asked your boss for a salary increase?... how did you do it?... were you successful or not?... did your boss get angry?... With the continous increase in the price of gas and other basis commodities... and the fact that i have been working for this company for almost a year now... do you think it is appropriate for me to ask for a salary increase?... i have been thinking about this for days now... but i am afraid that i might offend my boss considering the fact that she is already 81 years old... and is quite conservative in all aspect... So... i would gladly appreciate it if you can give me some pointers...

Hello aseretdd, Amazingly, I never asked for salary increment. Our salary review is in July every year but the company will only pay our new salary in March, next year and pays all the 7 months backdated salaries. I don't know whether I am lucky or not but I still feel my salary is far lower than my colleagues who have worked for the same period like me. After getting promoted last few months, I have been thinking to ask for special salary increment comes this July. I should get better as my responsibilities are greater and bigger than before. [gr8life]
I think you should get a salary increase... considering the fact that you were promoted and that you were given more and bigger responsibilities... a salary increase is synonymous to a promotion... in my case... the company that i work for is not that organized... we do not have a union... since there are only a few of us who work here... and the salary is determined only by my boss... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

You know, although I've had many jobs, I never have done that. It does sound like a confusing experience. Once I wasn't hired for a job because they said I didn't ask for enough money, though. I thought that was pretty odd. Most of the jobs I have ever held had fixed salaries, so there was no negotiating. I rather liked that. Good look and sorry I cannot help you at all on this one! [drannhh]
This is actually the first job i have that doesn't have a sort of salary scale... that is why i don't know how to ask for a raise... but i think it is odd not to get a job just because you did not ask for enough money... i got turned down recently because they couldn't afford me... well... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

I have never asked for a pay increase. I'm only 25 so i don't think I'm in a position to do that yet. It is true that the cost of living is rising dramatically but at the same time, everyone has to deal with these issues, not just you. If you feel like you're exerting yourself at work and you are a good employee well I don't see why you shouldn't give it a try! Personally i'm too nervous to ask my boss for a raise but like I said, If I felt like I truly deserved it and was working harder than usual for the company, well I'd certainy consider asking for a raise. Let us know how you go! [coffeeshot]
Well, i just found out that my boss is sick... she is 81 years old... so i have to cancel my plans of asking for a raise... until such a time that she is well and strong enough to go over the business... but i agree... you are still young and has a long way to go in the working environment... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

Most companies fiscal calendar year ends June 30, which means they have a whole new budget on July 1. Budgets get much looser after July 1 and that's when they give out raises for the year. [liperoterachel]
Well, the company that i work for doesn't work that way... since the owner is running it like it was during 50 years ago... so everything is solely based on what she thinks... how i wish we have a fiscal calendar here... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

aseretdd, i never asked for salary increament. my company have a certain period to increase salary. our increament is based on performance. so, employee who get perfect performance will get high increament. bu to tell you the truth, i want have increament everyday. [fratertelo]
That is the same thing with the companies that i worked for before... but the one that i am in now... doesn't have such increments... and i am afraid that if i don't ask... i will never have a salary increase... but asking would have to wait since my boss is sick right now... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

salary increase according to me is not time dependent. it is about how well you perform. when u feel that u perform better and the work load is increasing based on your performance then it is the time for salary increase. but i dont see that happening in any concerns. they claim for salary increase for certain period of time. [thyaga03]
That is the common practice in most companies... even the big and established ones... but that is not the case in the company where i work... it is so different here since my boss is running it the same way for 30 years now... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

Honestly, I really don't know. I've never kept a job long enough to know, well aside from my own job, that I work from hom. I've worked that almost a year and a half, but I'm my own boss. I wouldn't do it before six months though. [Samanthavv]
The two of us are definitely at a lost here... i have never asked for a raise before since the previous company that i worked for had a scale for yearly salary increase... but since you are your own boss... would you get offended if one of your workers ask for a raise?... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

Well, the salary increase is always an unconfortable topic to discuss, but this works with me once (a 19 years old rookie ask me for a salary increase), put in a balance your list of duties, the time that you take working on that per week and value yourself as employee, also helps to be sharp on your work, get in time and not be the first person to go home at the end of the day and a very important thing is to know the status of the company, if is increasing the productivity or if not, find the appropiate moment in bussiness speaking. Then ask your boss for a feedback. Schedule a meeting with him for a 1 on 1. Once there explain him the situation, you know if you really likes that job tell him why you think you deserve some motivation. Most of all bosses likes that employees come with ideas to improve the job. If this doesnīt work and you really are breaking an arm for the job is better that you start looking for a new one and if you are a hard worker thatīs will not be a problem. To be honest its not easy. Iīm 29 years old (I start working at 18 and takes me a lot of jobs and bosses to find a place that value me a pay me for it. GO FOR IT!! [Stvan18]
I will certainly keep your advice in mind... especially when i work in a different company... but for now... i don't think any of what you said will work... since i just found out that my boss is sick... so i would have to wait for the right moment... thanks for the response... welcome to mylot... and i hope you enjoy every minute of your stay here... [aseretdd]

It may sound like arrogant to demand. But I think we can still ask for increase to our bosses. Whatever the circumstances is, it would be depend on the basic needs we encounter in our day to day living. Presently, we have encountered a price hike due to economic crisis. If this will continue to rise, of course, there is in need for us to demand an increase to sustain our basic needs. [sherylljoan]
yeah...let's just be practical...in a sense that lets need to act as actors and actresses having the context of much greater than ourselves so that we know where we lived in and whats the purpose of... [clandestinef]

No, I have never asked my boss to have a salary increase. We hope our boss will be kind and consider it to have the salary increase by himself. We dare not to ask him about it. Nobody want to make him mad:) If he wants to pay more for us, it's no need to ask. Besides, it seems that he is fair in this aspect. He will have the same salary raise for everybody at the same time. I love China [youless]
Seem like you have a very good boss when it comes to salary... which all of us would like to have... i also do not like to talk about salary with my boss... but i feel that if i don't nothing will happen... you are very lucky in that aspect... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

A person should never be "afraid" to ask for a raise if: They're dependable; don't take excess sick or other time off work. They're good at the job they do; don't waste their employer's time by chatting with co-workers or by tending to matters not related to work while on the job (like signing on to myLot). :D They have skills to offer their employer and utilize those skills to the employer's benefit. At 81, if your boss has kept up with current events, and (not to be offensive), if she's sound of mind, she would realize that rising prices are killing EVERYONE. Companies are also suffering. It depends what kind of business you work for. A good Human Resources department will probably have all the "right" reasons why the company cannot give you a raise at this time, but if your direct report boss is aware of your work ethics and they are good, she could push beyond Human Resources for a raise. It might not be a lot. I don't know what the economy is like in your area, but sure, it's worth a try. If you've been with the company for almost a year, you might already be in consideration for a raise. Many companies evaluate their staff on an "anniversary" basis. Plan your request so you'll be prepared to answer any questions your boss might toss into your court, and good luck. Memo to self: Some people need a raise. Others need a JOB. Some companies actually ban internet use... but in my case it is not... i have a lot of priviledges where i work... and that includes using the internet... but in all other aspect... i think i am doing a very good job... but the problem is... my boss lives far away from the office... and i just found out that she is sick... so my plans of asking for a raise is now currently at a hold... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

My boss who is sitting in the next room says "you can always ask" "it doesn't mean your going to get it but if you don't ask then your not going to get it" The business I work for is a small family owned company. I have been here since Aug 07 and although I haven't asked for a raise yet I am going to soon. Here is how I plan to put it... When I started here in Aug I took on the responsibilities of the last person with no training or job description. I have since cleaned up all the messes the last person left and have implemented many new and innovative ways to keep up with the demands of our customers. I bought the accounts receivable to the best it has ever been in just 16 weeks. We are current on every thing and have little debt because I have collected all the outstanding balances of our customers giving us the money to pay every thing on time and some things off. As we all know every thing is on the rise. And I have begun to see things are getting very tight on my salary. I have already calculated what I think I have worked hard for; a 3% increase in my salary is not only fair but deserved. Please take my request into consideration. I am going to do this in July. In hopes that in August I can ask for a weeks paid vacation a year. Which is not currently offered. [ebsharer]
I think you have a very good plan... and it seems that you boss is the open minded type... so everything you present to him will be considered carefully... i hope you get that raise in August... since base on what you wrote here... you certainly deserve it... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

At my work every October we get a 20 cent raise and we still don't think that's enough for the work that we do. There's a top out amount where we can't get more than that. Coming up there was word around work saying that we are going on strike and fighting for a raise. They call me in because they are short staffed and I told them that I have no gas in my vehical and had to pay bills so I can't come in. I've done that more than once before so I'm sure it's being recorded in their books and I do that to make a point. It's not going to hurt my job or anything, but what I'm trying to tell them is that the prices for gas went up and obviously I'm not getting paid enough to get there otherwise what shifts I'm already scheduled for. I think your best bet is to approach your boss and just plain out tell her that you're having a hard time making ends meet and would like to know if you could get an increase in your wage. [nixxi76]
I think you are right... i think i just need to be sincere and be honest to say that i cannot make ends meet with my current salary amidst the increase of all commodities... but for now... that would have to wait since i just found out that she is sick... i hope everything will turn out for the best at your work place... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

My husband will always check online about the salary of his job and if it states that it is with that bracket and he is not yet there, he will always voice out to his boss,as long as you know your accomplishments for the year, you will be confident always to ask for it and if they will refuse, they have valid reasons for doing so, the bottom line is at least you ask and know the reasons rather than being confused and disturbed thinking about it! Just try to do it, there is nothing wrong if he will not grant it at least he knows your need and who knows, he will work for that! [checapricorn]
I see..not a good timing then..ANyway, I hope you will get your increase. When I was working, that is given every year and it excites us a lot even if most of our increase will be distributed only to the tax and some deductions! Cheers! [checapricorn]

I think companies should already have thought of increasing wages of their employees after seeing all these crisis coming. But they stay and try to be blind and deaf cause increasing wages would be a big factor for their companies profits. I don't know much about marketing or managing stuff, but I'm getting there, but I still really think that companies should take some consideration about their employees especially these days that things that we buy won't ever decreases its cost. [smooch091784]
I agree with you... some companies try not to listen or they make all the excuses not give their workers the much needed salary increase... so there is a need to ask or demand for one... i just hope that i can do it when my boss is already feeling fine... thanks for the response... welcome to mylot and i hope you enjoy your stay here... [aseretdd]

It seems to be a great challenge. But you must consider how is your relationship with your boss. What about if she consider you as your son or grandson? Depending on that, you can decide how to tell her. But if you feel so afraid of that, maybe is better that you don't ask for the salary increase. [daniel575]
I am not exactly sure on how my boss views me... since she lives far from the office... in fact... in another city... and i rarely see or talk to her... but i think i will give it a try when she is no longer sick... thanks for the response... welcome to mylot... and i hope you enjoy your stay here... [aseretdd]

I haven't done it,but my boyfriend often asks his boss for the salary increase. My boyfriend is a designer. He often thinks his value should be paid more, then he often says to his boss directly. His boss says ok every time.I think his success of his salary increasing dues to the boss's recognization of his hard working. So you'd better make sure that your hard working has been saw by your boss and he recognize it. [xiaojing1226]
Well, that is one of my problems... my boss lives in a different city... and i don't really get to talk to her... if ever i need something... i tell it to her personal secretary... so i am in a difficult situation... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

its just after 1 year from the earlier salary hike,. some companies hike the salary after 6 months also. it depends also on the policy the company have.it may be that the boss is like that, its your right to ask for hike. [subha12]
Yes, my boss is not like the other professional boss... and we don't have any policy on salary increase... so i am in a tight situation here... but i think i will try once she gets better... i just recently found out that she is sick... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

Hi Aseretdd: I have never had to ask for "The Company" to increase my salary. In Canada it is increased to reflect the cost of living, every year. We also discuss my situation every six months, (after I worked for them for a year). I would make an appointment with your boss and tell her what you have done for the company during the year you have worked for the company. Then tell her you believe you deserve a raise. Good luck. Have a great day. Ivor [TheSpy]
It is good that the company you work for is sensitive enough to give you a raise... but given the kind of job that you have... i think that is well deserved... my govenment just approved a meager salary increase for the workers... but i don't know if my boss will comply to that... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

Yes as a matter of fact I did ask for a salary increase. I think the best time to ask for it is when something good has happen to him and he is nice. That way you will have more oportunity to get the salary increase. Imagine you work in a shoes store. In that day your selling lots of shoes. You can try asking for a salary increase and wait for luck to come. Don't forget that if in that day everything is going quite OK because your selling alot, the things can turn and the day will be bad because you ruined it by asking for a salary increase! [bower007]
You are very brave in asking for a salary increase... how did it turn out?... i hope your boss gave you a big one... in my case now is not a good time to ask for it because my boss is currently confined in the hospital... so i would have to wait until she is better... thanks for the response... and welcome to mylot... [aseretdd]

Hello aseretdd,I think if you proven yourself to your boss that your worthy enough for some salary increasing, For example, you always do excellent work in your job. Then why not ask him to make some salary increase. [raditsa421]
I always try to do my best in every tasks assigned to me... but then... it is just that there is very little to do... but i always ask them how i can be of help... or what other things i can do for them... and now that my boss is sick... this is not the good time to ask for a raise... so i would have to wait... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]

i have not tried asking for an increase from my employer. luckily, i have employers who knows when to increase the salary of their employee. i think if you have the good performance and your boss is satisfied with you work, she won't get disappointed if you ask for an increase. just try your luck, ask it from her in the way that she won't get offended with you. [julyteen]
I had to put off my plan of asking for a salary raise... because my boss was confined for two weeks in the hospital... so a raise in not an option for now... because of her medical bills... maybe after a few months... i will try... thanks for the response... [aseretdd]
