I remember when I got here, my husband's aunt gave me lot of suggestions to find a job, but she always came back to a bank clerk. For her it was such a nice job!
Even today she often says things like "You could have been working in a bank" " they make good money and it's such a nice job"
For me it isn't. I like money, like everyone else, but I really don't like to work with it. For me, spending the days counting other people's money would feel quite depressing. ANd she was wrong anyways, poor bank clerks don't make as much money as she imagined LOL
The main point is bank clerk would be the most boring and depressing job I can thing of.
What about you ? WOuld you like to work in a bank? DId you ever work in a bank?

I would love to work at a bank. I think the pay would be very good. it might be boring though, but right now I would go for the pay. [francisco81]
Well, for a good pay it would all depend in which position at the bank. Hubby's aunt kept mentioning teller, which has a really low pay. I think that even if it payed somewhat well, I still would not like to work in one. I would really have trouble in that kind of a job , it would be like being under an anesthetic for 7.5 hours a day LOL [arkaf61]
I don't think i'd like to work in a bank since it gets robbed frequently. I'd be afraid that i'd get hurt during the robbery.I know there aren't that many robberies in my area, but,it also has to do with the money, and handling things at the bank.I just don't think i could do it,to tell ya the truth about it. Thanks for asking. [Thai_Guy]
I just think it's one of the most boring jobs there is , I would probably welcome a robbery as means of some adrenaline rush at least LOL [arkaf61]
I never work in a bank. I hate there! I will never do anything that I hate or not interesting, counting money all day long is so boring, I would rather be a street cleaner than be a bank clerk. Long live freedom! [dajiale]
LOL I completely agree with you :):):):) [arkaf61]
I am considering that job also but I am not sure yet if I will push through because of the rampant robbery here in DFW, Texas. I got scared. Anyway, I have another plans ready so it is just ok if I'll not get it. Bank tellers doesn't really have a good starting pay especially if it is just a small bank. [MarieJ23]
I certainly prefer to handle people than money I think that is the reason why I wouldn't last in a bank :) [arkaf61]
Tackling the problem from a different direction, what jobs do you think will not be boring? I think you will find most occupations have their boring moments and their exciting or challenging moments. [smacksman]
You have a point, I think it comes down to me not liking to deal with money, at least not 7.5 hours a day everyday. I like to deal with people - which a bank would provide in a very impersonal way - but in a different setting and different conditions. [arkaf61]
In my early 20's I went to a community college and took a bank teller ciertification course. I was a single parent and wated a day job, bankers hours so to speak. The course took 9 months and I finished it and never got hired. The college helped with placement but I only got 2 interviews. They wanted a fresh out of High School person and i had responsibilites that could keep me from going to work. I ended up working in a McDonalds. I have to admit that over the years the training has helped me get other jobs though. I agree bank tellers get barely minimum wage to start and the bankers hours premise is long gone here. There's a local bank that is open 8AM to 8PM and the tellers work all day so many days and are off so many days, yet others only work parttime days to 25 hours week and get no benefits. Not really a good job. [tess1960]
Maybe you're right. Maybe this was her dream job, the one that she would like but could not do. But not in terms of money for sure. Before she retired she was making $18/hour. This at a time where a bank teller was starting at $12. [arkaf61]
For here the pay is good. They say it sucks but they get lots of holidays and the hours are very good. They never have to work late. Any reason to close, they do. For they pay okay it is doctor pay but teachers, police, firefighters, almost all jobs people say they aren't getting enough for what they do. I know the clerks here all own their own homes and are driving brand new cars. They always have fancy clothes on. Which is more then I have now, so I would do it. LOL [vicki2876]
I think I couldn't do it for a long time even if they paid me my weight in gold LOL I need a job that is stimulating and deals with very different issues. But I know that some people actually enjoy it. [arkaf61]
Hello Arkaf61, I'm with you on this one. I would never wish to be a bank teller. Tellers do not make much money, they're exposed to infinite filth & bacteria, and they're lambasted by the public all day long. That would be a nightmare for me. I know quite a few bankers. None are tellers. Some work in front end management, others in back end management. Most that I know really like their work, but it's just not for me. [ladyluna]
It's not for me either LOL As for my aunt, not she never passed out an opportunity to work in a bank. I think it's just what she thinks its a respectable nice job. SHe doesn't have qualifications to be a bank teller not only because she doesn't speak or write English that well, but also because she only has grade 4 like many other older people back home. The funny thing is that at her own job - cleaner in an hospital - she was making more money per hour than most bank tellers, but still she felt a bank teller was the best job. She tried to convince all of us - me , hubby, and her son that it was the best job for us :) [arkaf61]
i think it wouldnt be that much depressing , i wouldnt mind to work as a bank clerk but its not a job that gives that much money... it would only be depressing if you had to count a millionairy deposit!! you would be thinking about if you had that much money with you!!! lol [darkaeon]
hehehe I hear you:) I don't really care much about the money other people have, but handling money regardless of whose it is, is something that really puts me to sleep LOL As I said in my post, of course I understand money is needed, but I"m not even the kind of person that dreams about being rich. I just wish we could bypass money completely LOL [arkaf61]
I'm not sure how it is now because I don't know any bank employees right now. But banks here in the U.S. used to be widely known as terrible cheapskates when it came to their employees. They worked them short hours so they wouldn't be fulltime and qualify for benefits; they'd make them come in for weekend training and decorating for holidays without paying them, etc., etc. Nobody in my family EVER wanted us to work in a bank, lol. [Kay1213]
Same here , I don't remember anyone in my family saying " MY dear, why don't you try to be a bank teller, it's such a nice job ! " LOL In my case it's not the hours or the pay, it's just the job itself :) [arkaf61]
I like being a bank teller. It's kinda fun actually. The customers talk a lot, are usually kind of interesting, and like to bring us presents. Our branch is practically on campus of the local college, so we get insane amount of students, but we get some residents too. And we don't really just do people's transactions, we also talk to them about their accounts, help them try to figure out ways to do more with their money, talk to them about their financial needs, solve problems... all kinds of things. I've never thought of it as boring, except occasionally in summer when it gets really slow because the students are gone. *shrugs* I guess I'm just a boring person or something. =P [lecanis]
SO I'm glad I started this discussion. You were able to remember the reasons why you enjoy your job:) Congratulations on the 5000 as well. I can see that my not being here for the summer made a huge difference, I'm still not even in the 3000s :) [arkaf61]
No i haven't worked in a bank before but I wouldn't want to . The pay might be quite high but like you said. I will be counting other people's money. More like an accountant i suppose. At least, work at a place where you can find satisfaction . If it's only for the money and you are not happy, it will be damaging in the long run. Your attitude might change and the environment will me you more depressed . I am an engineer and i planned this since high school. It doesn't pay as well as a real estate agent but it gives me pleasure to have a satisfying job. [mikecrush]
Your uncle was very wise. If we keep doing something that leaves us unsatisfied every single day of our lives our health certainly will pay for it, if not physically at least mentally. [arkaf61]
I would not want to work in a bank. I am terrible at counting money. I'd probably get fired within a few days haha. Plus i would feel bad when i'd cash a rich persons check and i'm there working for minimum wage haha. The only good thing about it is getting all the holidays off. Thats about the only plus i see when working as a clerk. Well that and getting to shoot things through those tubes haha. [Smithfamily]
I don't like to count money either. I would be the slowest teller because I would always want to count one more time just in case there was a mistake LOL There are many other jobs that have all the holidays and then some so that wouldn't change my mind :) [arkaf61]
I actually do work at a credit union close enough to being a bank. It is ok. It is not what I want to do in the long run, but it is steady work. [nangel78]
Yes, sometimes we need the security of steady work. I understand that. But I confess that even considering the safety factor there are a few jobs I don't think I could do. ONe if certainly a bank teller, the other one is that people from the financial companies that call those who are late on their payments . [arkaf61]
Working in a bank would not be a good job for me. I am terrible at math...even adding 2 numbers together can get me in trouble. I would never apply for a job at a bank. [Nadinest]
Yeah I would always be counting the money 5 or 6 times and in the end would still not be sure if I made a mistake LOL [arkaf61]
I have never wanted to work in a bank, never applied to work in a bank. I would find it stressful to be responsible for everyone else's money, and depressing as well. I knew that bank employees were not that well paid, as the only person I ever knew who did that also had to have a second job. You have to dress nice, always, and look nice, which might be a plus, but the rest of it never interested me, and certainly does not interest me at this stage of my life. I like more variety in my job, and am not cut out for a business career. [GardenGerty]
I feel just like you:) I was actually talking to hubby's aunt about this today. I think she sees that job as glamorous and something of a high end thing - even if it's just a teller. I understand her. She never had much education or the opportunity for better herself, and bank tellers were quite respected back home. So for her it seems like a dream job. Although her son has a university course ,she doesn't understand it. Poor guy took political science and it's something she doesn't really understand so even his masters is nothing much for her and she would still aspire to have her son as a bank teller :) SHe is adorable and I love her to pieces but I don't think I could be a bank teller just for her :) [arkaf61]
hmm well i dont have particular interests to work in a bank but if i get a job there i would love to work there because as you know bank provides handsome earning opportunity [varunkrishna007]
When I passed out of my degree Honours Course in Economics, I applied for a bank job and got an appointment order and I joined the Bank. I did not like the functioning of a bank, because it was tension oriented job. I gave it up and rejoined university for postgraduate course. Even today I do not like the bank job. [ssh123]
