Would You Still Work If You Won The Lottery

The issues that I am trying to get at is if you work because you have to pay your bills and other expenses or do you work because you are motivated by a deeper need to contribute to society ? I am thinking for the former wouldn't resign from their job the day they won it and head off on a world wide cruise. I am thinking that such persons would spend their time lounging in the sun in some exotic locations drinking margaritas and applying sunscreen. Maybe they are those of this group who wouldn't resign but they would suddenly start putting out even less than they used or start coming to work late and eventually get fired since they don't need the job. Those who are motivated by work though would continue as before ,maybe they would get a nicer car ,nicer home and a few extra amenities but their work ethics wouldn't change. They would come to work the same time and put out the same effort Would your work ethics change if you won the lottery and if so how ?

That question made me think a little.I doubt I would ever win lottery since I'm known as the person who spends$100 and wins 10 but dreaming is still free, right? I would definitely keep working, maybe switch to part-time or take a bit more vacations. Becoming instantly rich sounds like a great opportunity to finally find a job that I would love and keep no matter what.Probably something that would make me use my brain in a creative way which I haven't done in years. Cruises and travelling are awesome, especially world travel but one gets tired of moving from place to place. I hate it when I have too many days off in a row,not because I'm such a hard-worker but because I have nothing to do,you might get bored at the job but at least you get paid for it. So yes,I would keep the job but would it be my current one?.. [AnakSuNamun]
You have mentioned a good point that many persons ignore in the joy of becomming rich and that is that doing nothing can sometimes be a drag.Sometimes our poverty stricken lives can be more excting than having a lot of money .Atleast we have a scehdule and that keeps us going [ronnyb]

the question is quite difficult. i always wondered that if i would have won a lottery then would i work. it took me years to think about this. but now answer is here. ya, i would go to work even if i would have won a big lottery because working will keep me alive it will not bring sadness in my life, because then i will have no spare time to think of the quarrels that i had with my family. but if i will not work i will become sad. [kapil_poundarik]
Good answer ,not many persons realise that work is more than just providing money for our expenses.Work also gives our lives structure and something to occupy our time [ronnyb]

Yes, I will continue working for the sense of fulfillment and for my self-respect. Also to contribute something worthwhile to society. And to be a good example to my children. [bantilesroger]

I'd still work because winning the lottery only changes my financial situation. I still need something to do with my time . Not with time spending all the money folishly. Working would fill that time. [jcay_lorna]

hi firend, i have seen this type of discussion first time on mylot.its different from previous or any other discussion.thanks, for creating this discussion.friend, i think that anybody should work after wining the lottery or any other big amount of mnoey.because work keeps our body fit ,work is the part of our life.if we does not working after such a win, then we are doing bad like drinking, smoking and misleading things.our state mind changes doing things which are not good for others.if anybody win lottery then he/she have start buisness or give some money to charties. happy mylotting [yadav8797]

I don't really play the lottery anymore but if I did and actually won I probably would still but it would be my own business something that I want to do. I would probably get a few nice things for the house maybe remodel and a nicer car. [christylynn]

Me? No. I'm a homemaker and I enjoy it. I'm here for my sons. My husband? He'd better not quit his job! He'd drive me NUTS! If he has a couple of days off in a row then I'm about to push him out the door! He gets bored easily and he doesn't read like I do. He gets bored watching TV. He doesn't play video games. I feel like I have to entertain him or something, especially when the weather is bad. Time to sing and dance! lol He'll go outside to the garage and tinker with the cars or something during the summer, but during the winter or on rainy days he's under my feet driving me nuts. He might not work the same job (although he seems to enjoy this one since he got out of the Navy) but he'd have to do something or drive us both bonkers with his boredom! [lisado]

Yes,I should absolute go on with my work. But I should work less hours a week. You miss the social part if you stop working [Carambole]

i would not continue my work if i won the lottery ronnyb.. instead, i'd put a half of my money in the bank(and have it double my money thru interest), then put up a charity foundation. that's a new work that i'd like to try. i heard it is fulfilling.. take care :) [darianne]

I would continue to work, but more on a volunteer basis and for a needed charity. If I didn't have to work because I won a multi million dollar lottery, my first choice would be to contribute to the community. I would take more time to enjoy the finer things in life, particularly nature, family and friends. I would not continue to work to only start coming in late or doing less on the job. My work ethics would not change but my line of work would. I would likely put in more effort since I would be working towards helping those in need. [EvrWonder]

I've often thought about it and my answer always was that I'd continue to work. (Not for the money ... if I won I wouldn't need it) But lately I've rethought my options. I know that I'd upgrade my home. I already have it picked out. And, as I get older and realize that time is 'awasting, I'd find other ways to keep busy beyond working. No ... if I were to win tomorrow (or even tonight) I'd replan my future and work would not be a part of it. There are plenty of things to keep me busy and many people with which the wealth could be shared ... and shared ... and shared. Memo to self: Wishing ya luck RJ. Thanks RJ! (C) 2008 RJScott [rjscott]
I am sure you could find ways to occupy your time outside of work ,after all you now have money and you would still be active .I have always wondered if you wouldnt get lazy and bored but your suggestion suggest a way to get rid of that while enjoying your money [ronnyb]

Good question, immediate response is no, but I think I would, preferably less hours :O), but with the economy I am one of 8 left out of a 40 + who have lost their jobs. Co-workers are like family and in our case we have all been with each ohter 20 + years. Raised children together molded our spouse ::OO)) Plus I like my job and love my clients. [Burton4]

Dear friend, Yes, and if possible try to have my own office that could give work to others. More over I would also invest the lot and try to expand my business. I do like my present job and my boss so I have no plants to quit my job even if I get a lottery, may be I may just take few holidays to enjoy my life a bit with that money.happy [SHAMRACK]

Tough question, always difficult to know for real when it doesn't happen. I think I would stop working and travel a lot though, at least for a while. There are so many places, countries that I would love to visit and I don't do it because of money. I would also like to live in some countries for a while just to try. So finally, I would say, yes, I would stop working to be able to travel and then when I am done with traveling, maybe go back to work, although I am not sure...... [frenchmom]

Hello! I do not work. But, if I won the lottery, I would certainly continue my studies. Winning the lottery is not like winning in life. There is still a lot to learn, no matter how much money you make. And winning in the lottery does not means you are rich forever. You must know how to spend your money wisely. Otherwise, it will disappear as sudden as it came. Respectfully, Munhozmib. [munhozmib]

I don't work at the moment but I would get a bigger house and have a cleaner, not a maid as I like to do things for my self,my husband would hand his notice in at work because like he says he enjoys driving his lorry and he has no axe to grind. We would buy a bigger house ,have better holidays. Our youngest son is at a crucial stage of his education and is starting his A levels in september for two year, so my husband would still have to work,he would probably find a business opportunity and invest in a few things.I cannot imagine for a hundred years my husband could stay at home without working,he would go round the bend so thats what we would do,then when my son goes off to university in a couple of years, we will go round the world and laze on those sunny beaches we might even come out to Jamaica and stay with you,and you could show us the sights. [suzzy3]

If I won the lottery and I didn't have to worry about having a job to pay my bills, I will still work... but it would be volunteer work, or a FUN job (like at a pool or a gym or coffee shop or clothing store) that pays minimum wage. Even if I were rich, I would probably still have a hard time spending money foolishly - like on lavish vacations and super expensive clothes, cars and houses. My first goal would be to become debt free, then I would meet with a financial advisor so that my fortune would last a lifetime. [stejhas]

I would definitely resign from current post if i won a lottery. What is point of working? I work to pay bills and other expenses as well as provide financial support for my family. This is my reality bites. Perhaps, I will continue earning online to fulfill my time or opening my own business so that the money lottery will exhaust. I will also upgrade my education so that I teach other people. I like teaching people but my current work does not permit me to this. [azlimuna]

Yes i will work because why to loose money which we are getting from our job. i really belive that job is permanent while who know how do we spend the easy money earned from the lottery. I will go for a car, house and i will get all that money can buy but i will continue the job which i am doing [saichandtalluri]

I am presently unemployed, but if I was working and hit the lottery, I would not continue to work. There are so many people out of work, that I would be more than glad to step down, in order to give someone else the opportunity to support themselves and their families. I basically work to keep the bills paid, I have not found a job yet that I love so much I would continue to work if I did not need the money. I would quit in a heartbeat. [sudalunts]

I can make good investments with that much money to contribute to society without having to work =) so i would quit my job and work on my finances [Seyduna]

Assuming I won a lottery prize.........(How I wish..) It would be dumb to keep the same just selling Home Accents I would still go to work and do my usual routine. Maybe it is true that am motivated to work to sustain my daily living, but having a work is likewise a self-satisfaction to those who are challenged holding tasks. Besides, even the rich people still goes to work though with higher positions or invest into businesses which is still considered a work. No one can stop me from working even if I won a big big sum of money, let us say an amount that provides my future. However, money can be lost if you do not know how to make use of it in a more appropriate or indispensable manner. I would perhaps give myself a pamper - like travel or have a cruise, but I will not do that all the time and waste the money for unnecessary luxury or pleasure. It would be good to get into the Affordable real esate game if money was around. I will still go to work everyday, yet I would invest the winning prize for my top 5 necessary things. I would buy a house that is comfortable to stay on to save for monthly rents staying on apartment (am living independent on a City, that's why).. A car which I could use without commuting all the time. What else?...I will invest a percentage of the winning prize on a business and the rest should be deposited on a Bank. [maean_19]

I wouldnt give up working... i mite open a business and of course have a manager manage it.. but then i would also have to see over what they do... so that way i am occupied... and life wouldnt be so boring..... i noticed that if im not working... i tend to be short tempered and messed up most of the time... lol like pick up fights with anybody... in general go crazy.. so best way for me is to work.. [j47lee]

I would still work. I would still learn. I would still go to college and take courses. In between, I would spend my money on travel and building new houses for myself and all my family, etc. Part of my work would be trying to find worthwhile causes in this world to donate some of my win to. [fairydew]

It depends how much I won in the lottery.. Lets see if its worth P200M (Phil Equiv., and then my works pays me decent but bunch of work papers.. I will definitely resigned and put up my owm business. I would give all the money back and sell Wallpaper Borders for the rest of my life. I will not use that money for too much pleasure coz it might be vanished since that money comes from gambling..I will just stick to use the money in a very positive way.. I might use that to see the world leisurely but suddenly wake up with only coins left.. its so sad.. [I_am_yours_06]

of course!i would like to work...i will keep working...winning the lotto is just because i was lucky..it's like something impossible came my way and i got it..that's just it...but working is a necessity in life.we have to work to be able to live and be comfortable...winning is just an added feature in my life...but of course i will be able to do more with the money from the lottery...hahaha! [tabachi]

Hi ronnyb, if I were to win any of the first three prizes of the lottery and get a huge sum of cash, I think I still would like to have my work as before. I love my two current part time jobs as well as some of my colleagues. It is always to have great fun by chatting and joking while working together with nice people harmoniously, though sometimes we are pretty busy with our work load. I would just acted in Musicals for the rest of my life if I won. We would feel excited and happy with the great amount of money received. Of course we would spend some of them having long traveling visiting dreamed countries. Or buy an ideal house and auto. Definitely I would feel bored and monotonous after enjoy doing these for some period. I persist to continue doing my office work though I possess great amount money. We could try to invest money to start whatever business that could bring us profit. If we keep on spending money like water without working I believe we will run out of money very soon. No way why on earth would I care about some crappy job selling O-Matic happy posting and have a nice day. [lkbooi]

i wouldnt work if i get enough money.will deposit a major portion and ensure that i get enough money as interest from my deposit.will lead a life in a place somewhere in the hills.pursue my hobbies and with no tension for the next month would just live life to the fullest. [aakay4u]

Well, yeah, I will still work since I don't know when money will last but when we talk about career. Once, you have know how to handle it very well, it will last. [mae1216]

Yes, I will definitely continue to work. You see, we work not only to meet our expenses but to keep ourselves busy. I don't think one can spend all his life in entertainment and having fun. One will simply get tired of it. Well, that's what I think. [cybersoft01]

As I am a housewife it was impossible for me to participate in the discussion. Later I asked my husband and I am writing his views on this issue in his own word. Yeah after I win 200M USD I would make to set around selling Trout Fishing Poles for one $1 a day. "Yes, I shall continue my work. The reasons: 1) It is the job which gives me social status, respect and give me the chance to prove my ability in the field of banking. And I love this job. 2) In the age of 46 I can't imagine to live without a respect less job. 3) Life is not only for passing the days. 4) Satisfaction of a performer will not come from money only. 5) We can purchase many thing by money but not our respect. 6) To me work is worship." [sona22]

It would depend on how much I won, if it was a lot then I would not work I would just enjoy life to the full. If it was just a bit then no I would not give up work I would just invest what I had won somewhere and build it up. [gemini_rose]

I would still work with children, in child day care or once I get my diploma as a pedagogue. I might cut down on the hours though and work part time, and/or do volunteer work. Working with children gives me a good feeling and I like what I do, but like you said I would get a nicer appartment, big ol' climbing pole for my cats that covers an entire wall lol, that type of stuff. I would spend my days messing with Home and Garden Filters if I won the money. And I would donate an amount to charity, for research conceirning cancer and cystic fibrosis. A friend of mine passed away from CF, and a lot of people I knew died of cancer, so I guess that's the closest to me and you can't possibly support every single charity unfortunatly. [cyberfluf]
