How many of you practice yoga? Do you find it beneficial? What style of yoga do you practice?
I originally started doing it when I was 8 yrs old and continued til I was in my teens but then stopped due to, well various reasons really...but I started up again a couple yrs ago then stopped BUT I have started yet again because I really do miss the feeling i get from it....Vinyasa is the style that I do but I would like to try various other forms at some point..Unfortunately I have to be somewhat careful do to injuries from my past but even so i find it really does help me sleep better, think more clearly, lowers my stress level in a really big way among other things...

Yoga (Devanagari: ???) is a family of ancient spiritual practices dating back more than 5000-years from India. It is one of the six schools of Hindu philosophy. In India, Yoga is seen as a means to both physical health and spiritual mastery. Outside India, Yoga has become primarily associated with the practice of asanas (postures) of Hatha Yoga Yoga as a means of spiritual attainment is central to Hinduism (including Vedanta), Buddhism and Jainism and has influenced other religious and spiritual practices throughout the world. Hindu texts establishing the basis for yoga include the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and many others. The four main paths of Yoga are Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Raja Yoga. A committed practitioner of yoga is referred to as a yogi, yogin (masculine), or yogini (feminine). [zal3x89]
ok, thanks for the suggestion :) [pbskipper]
I would really love to learn Yoga, but learning Yoga is so expensive in my country and I can't really afford such a luxury. [xtinelee]
never "learn" yoga on our own. it is so complicated and demanding real knowledge and living Master [raver_eed]
I workout and I am just starting to find an interest in yoga. My mom had a book on it when I was a kid and I tried it back then. I am in the midst of writing a research paper for my COM 125 class that is based on the topic that exercise and healthy lifestyle choices will help you live longer and I included some research on healthy lifestyle options and the benefits of yoga, accupuncture, accupressure, and a few other "eastern" practices that are said to be life extending and great for the mind, body, and soul. See I knew you were deep! Don't worry though I will keep it on the low K. [sharone74]
yes keep it hush LOL Actually I have to admit, Eastern practices really are amazing and I think one thing i really love is the fact that many are the whole Mind, Body, Spirit connection thing...You dont just deal with the physical or you dont just deal with the mental etc, you deal with the combo...makes sense?...eeewww accupuncture...um not for me thanks LOL cause anyone tries to stick me with a bunch of needles is gonna get a fist in the face LOL [Ravenladyj]
I think I want to get into Yoga take a class on it. do they have something on the internet that can teach you? [marciascott]
Well you could check your local library and see if there are any videos to borrow or even your local video store like Blockbuster, they might have some...I know Netflix carries yoga titles and of course you could check into your local YMCA or pick up a copy of Yoga Journal magazine or even some books on it from the library.. as for online...here are a couple links for you http://www.yoga.com/ydc/enlighten/enlighten_home.asp http://www.yogajournal.com/ I love yoga Journal..I get the magazine every month. http://www.santosha.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=196 [Ravenladyj]

yoga helps u to be more organised [raver_eed]
I do Ashtanga yoga sometimes. I like how it makes me feel, but I am intimidated by all the pretzel people in the advanced class and the beginner class is too easy. I prefer to take the Pilates classes. [katerspader]
I do yoga from time to time. I'm not really sure what style I do. I just bought a video/dvd and started doing them. I couldn't go to a class because I would feel self conscience. I think it is beneficial. I have never felt as good as I do when I do yoga. [rmuxagirl]
I do practice yoga and I love it. I have been practicing for about 10 years now and I am self-taught. I have never taken lessons or seen an instructor in person. I began by purchasing a VHS and then I moved on to Bryan Kest's Power Yoga DVD's. I love the lean muscle definition you get with yoga by handling your own body weight. One of my favorite things is that it greatly helps me cope with stress and anxiety and it makes me feel more balanced. Since I enjoy other disciplines as well as I enjoy plaing the acoustic guitar, I am now addicted to the Yoga Booty Ballet Series DVD's. They combne my favorite things: yoga, ballet, dancing, weight training and pilates. It is a great workout and it gives me the best of all worlds. I really cannot imagine life without yoga. When I don't do it for a while I immediately notice the difference. My body gets stiff, I retian water, I get cranky, anxious, nervous, I even break out and I don't sleep that well. I really recommned people pratice yoga because the benefits are so worth it. Even though it may seem challenging at first, as your body gets used to it and loosens up, you will truly enjoy it and reap the benefits. [Lunnazol]
I practice Yoga. I have no formal training/teaching. I pretty much do my "own thing" at home. I have studied books on Yoga (and practices such as) for years. From my studies, I've adapted my own style of Yoga. It's a little of this....and a little of that....customized but yet not. I practice for Spiritual and physical reasons. It's a combo of stretching, meditating, exercise and relaxing. I take my Yoga practice very seriously. To me, it's about connecting to myself and my Creator and to nature. I practice for a better understanding, for discipline, for stress relief and for muscle tone. I love it! [sohodmc]
yes me and my family practice yoga.ya i and my family find it very helpful in controlling anger and stress..we do pranayamas and surya namaskar.we only started 2 years ago.It has great influence on our health as a healthy mind is needed for a healthy body, and yoga helps us to have sound mind. [blueray_01]
I have been doing Hatha yoga for about a year now. I really like the way that I feel after yoga class. I also sometimes do yogalates (a cross between yoga and pilates). I haven't done it in a few months at class because my yoga teacher is pregnant and confined to bed rest. I try to do it at home when I have time. [Withoutwings]

I used to do hatha yoga years ago and I did find it beneficial. It was very relaxing and I enjoyed the stretching exercises. The class I took was offered at the company I worked for at the time. We used to meet 2 days a week right after work, so it was very convenient. If I could find the time in my busy schedule I would consider taking classes again. Maybe if I had a friend to go with it would help motivate me. [pebbles724]

I do yoga Patanjali detailed the entire sum of knowledge about Yoga in 196 aphorisms (sutras), referred to also as Raja Yoga. Patanjali is part of the classical yoga era, when thousands of yoga asanas were still being practiced. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is considered the authoritative text on classical yoga. What you were doing since your 8th year despite breaks has contributed in a big way. That's whyt you're enjoying the fruits today. Don't quit.A small break now and then is not going to matter. With the time, you will acquire a dazzling personality that makes you stand out.Good luck lady [arlerambabu]

Try this book called Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha - by Swami Satyananda Saraswati. It explains all the asanas and mudras in great detail with pictures. The language is simple and the steps are quite understandable. It tells you which asana is good for which problem and which ones should be avoided for specific problems. I'm so impressed with it that i've been recommending it to everyone. It costs $30 at Amazon. In India it's available for Rs 200 (less than $5). If any friend of yours is visiting India you can ask him to get it for you. [imsobored]

I've only done yoga few times but I think it's is wonderful! I started it with the purpose of becoming a more relaxed, less stressed person and that it has done. I find that when I'm at yoga and afterwards, my mind is more at peace because it provides me with "me" time, rather than the hustle and bustle of every day life. I also think the stretching is great. Certainly something you have to push yourself with to make it work though. You could also write some relaxing words on paper its better to use digital printing rather then hand write them.Sometimes I feel more lazy so I don't try as hard to stretch, though really that only affects me in the end! [marryann]
i think you should keep doing it , i mean start doing it , because recently i had some medical problem ( which i dont ant to mention here ) , and someone suggested yoga , then i watched swami ramdev on TV , he told about just so many things that can be cured with yoga and to tell you my ailment got cured and and then i recommended it to my friend who had asthama , i m not joking but pranayam has healed her asthama so much that she doesnot carry the inhaler now , [simran1430]
YOGA : ITS VERY GOOD TO HEALTH . IT PREVENTS VARIOUS DISEASES . IT IMPROVES THE CIRCULATION. IT PREVENTS ASTHMA , GOOD GROWTH , BOTH PHYSICAL AND MENTAL . MAKES U GOOD LOOKING ALSO. EVEN I DO YOGA DAILY. I THINK IT SHOULD BE CONTINUOUS , NOT STOPPING FOR SOME DAYS, THEN DOING IT AGAIN. [sneharao]
never tried .. i do massage (make & receive) to destroy my stress level. I think yoga is good too.. maybe one day i'll try :-) thanks [Idefix72]
I'm a regular practitioner of Yoga. Small breaks as it happened in your case are not going to affect the good results given by yoga.Doing yoga does take some supplies like a mat and the right clothes just has if you were going to ride a horse you would have Equine supplies and products. But you should exercise utmost caution when you start after a break. Within no time you gain back your tempo. The general thing to be kept in mind is,there should not be vigorous and brisk activity during yoga.Remember its not all about the mind its can also be about the body so keep Bath and Body Supplies on hand because a dirty body will affect mind. Do slowly and in a rhythmic way. You should not forget your limitations like injuries as you said. You work out in your own circle described by you. In this respect Yoga is liberal. That I'm a beneficiary is an understatement. The power and vitality it gives me just with a small investment of 10 minutes of my time every day makes me a power house. I work for 10-12 hours a day without feeling the pinch of it.Is that not enough? [arlerambabu]
The word "yoga" means to yoke or union. Yoga is considered one of the orthodox systems of philosophy in India. Many people today know yoga only as the physical postures, but there are other paths that yogis have used in order to achieve enlightenment . Definitely give it a try. Take a beginner's class but most yoga intstructors let you know that everyone is at a different level and you dont need to do exactly what your neighbor can do. I starting doing yoga a few weeks ago and it makes me feel great. The nights I do yoga, I get the best sleep too. i am not flexible at all i cant even touch the floor but i would say science i started yoga which is last year most of my pains around my neck and back and stress of me. If you are new to yoga it might be a good idea to get a watch so you can time your class does not have to be a Rolex Watches or anything.so just do it the way you can do it and have fun Yoga is the best! You can search around for the best type to fit your lifestyle and some schools focus a lot on breath and general relaxation. I had the most awful semester last year and the only way I got through it was my beginner yoga class. [simran1430]
I've been interested in doing yoga for a while but everytime i join classes I end up giving up because i am not at all flexible and I end up feeling inadequate and not going back. [Brooke3]
I have always been intrigued by the concept of yoga but never tried it. I broke nine vertebrea when I was nine years old and have been scared, no terrified to try it. Susan [susaneverson]
I do yoga.I learnt it through an instructor.I find Yoga a convenient form of excercising. It does not require any gadgets or equipments. There are numerous benefits to be gained from Yoga.It tones and relaxes the muscles. It induces relaxation of the body and mind.i try to do various asanas everyday.I might even turn on my iPod Radio its seems to help me relax. At times when I do not have enough time i just stick to doing my 'suryanamaskar' atleast 5 times.i feel good. [biggerb]
Ya..practicing yoga regularly helps a lot physically and mentally as well. I dont know to technically speak about it. But I do it almost daily with pranayama and meditation. It has cured me from back pain and fatigue. Doing about 13 postures takes just 30 mins for me. I learned it from the Art of living course. [rajeshpalakkad]
